I think KDB was quite lazy. He would put his foot in if something got him angry or he lost the ball.
Yaya too but both were excellent for us.
Messi was lazy off the ball but he seemed to do alright. As long as we convert the chances Cherki will create, especially against teams who won't leave their 18 yard line, then I'm not that bothered about his work off the ball.

Cherki definitely doesn't work off the ball às hard as others however if his output becomes kdb levels or even a smidgen below, you can accept a lower work rate off the ball but it still needs to be adequate. He can be prone to just sauntering which a 21 year old really shouldn't getting away with unless you are messi. However if pep wants him then I'm not concerned. I'm confident it won't matter or he will adjust to peps demands.

If & when he signs, & no disrespect meant to Lyon, he will have to fight for a starting place against better players & won't just walk into the starting 11

That's true but it's clear talent wise, he's a starter for us and if he applies himself 100% I see no reason that stops him.

A fascinating response. Somehow you managed to insult me while avoiding the only question I asked:
Which of the above do you disagree with?
Fuck off I don’t need to answer your puerile questions, although I did, I advised you to read what his team mates for OL and France say about him. Where the fuck did you get your narrative that he’s lazy? How many times have you watched him being lazy? Utter clueless tit

You can fill your team with 10 joey Barton’s who would work their socks off. But you won’t win anything

When you get supremely talented players do you, as a manager, honestly want them to be pressing very much? Frankly, the problem with it is that if the ball gets turned over in the blink of an eye, to your team's advantage, then you've got a great midfielder like Rodri, or Bernardo (or of course till this season Kev) who are immediately looking for men in space up front. And if you've been pressing then you're not in space, you haven't had time to make a run to get into it. And anyway the guy whose backside you've been bothering is now bothering yours! Because that's his job.
If you watch, Haaland really doesn't press with any real conviction. It's patent. He makes a vague move towards a defender, without really committing. And clearly Pep's alright with that. And so, frankly, am I.

This!

There have been quite a few posts with articles & data analysis regarding Cherki's workrate (sprints, distance covered etc) - can people just look through them rather than posting the same 'criticism' over & over?

We're not buying Cherki for the defensive side of his game, we need his creativity and excellent dribbling skills to break Pep's system is based on ball control. Our primary means of defense is to get the ball back quickly once it turns over. Otherwise our high line is susceptible to attack.

We can compensate for some players who aren't great at pressing - but there comes a point when the entire system breaks down due to inadequate pressing. Case in point - this entire last season. Our press was slow - we were played around - and our high line lead to many goals for the opposition.

We already have to carry Haaland in this regard - a freakishly good #9 but one who isn't great at passing, holding the ball up, or pressing.

If Cherki joins our side and doesn't put in a shift on defense - that may screw up Pep's entire system.

So - with respect - I disagree. Prima facie - we absolutely need Cherki to put in a shift on defense - otherwise - just like at Lyon - he'll be withdrawn from the game even when we need to score.

Huh?

By "look through them" you seem to mean, stick your head in the sand and go all out for this player - ignore any and all defects.

I like Cherki and think he's our best option to replace KDB.

At the same time - if Cherki doesn't improve radically on defense - either Haaland or Cherki needs to go -we can't carry 2 players who are shit on defensive pressure.

If and when cherki signs he will be given the chance to press properly as a unit. We used to be so good at it and will be again.

Pep don’t want him running about like a madman after the ball. Plus city will have the ball for 70% of the time anyway. So he will press but at the right moment and only for a few mins at a time.

Creative players also have more wiggle room due to their impact.

I’m happy to wait and see.
