The Labour Government

Insurance premiums reducing (at present) are nothing to do with government. It’s more to do with investors and PE houses seeing there is a lot of money to be made in the industry, as by and large there has been fairly benign weather over the last few years (less catastrophic losses). Insurance is seen as recession proof, so more the Insurance companies and brokers are cannibalising one another.

Now they want more market share (ROI for those investors)- so they are slashing rates.

It is unsustainable; and will change soon (18 months) - so prices will raise in the medium term.

Again; this will not be a government issue. It’s a capitalism issue.
I know, but I was referring to another poster who, when asked how he was worse off as a direct result of government policy included insurance. It was partly irony.

'Staff restructure changes have taken place inorder to offset the recent NI increases'. That's a quote from my golf club who have had to let someone go because of the tax on jobs.
Better buckle up and hope we can survive the next 4 years of this disastrous government

Prime minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez "congratulated" Starmer "on his leadership", adding his government "succeeded where others had failed".

The spokesperson added: "Both leaders also agreed that this development unlocks huge opportunity to advance the bilateral relationship between the UK and Spain, on behalf of the British and Spanish people."

That's a big drop for a single month.

According to the ONS:

Real GDP is estimated to have grown by 0.7% in the three months to April 2025, compared with the three months to January 2025, with signs that some activity may have been brought forward from April to earlier in the year. Of the three main sectors in April 2025, services output was the largest contributor to the monthly GDP fall, decreasing by 0.4%. Production output also decreased, by 0.6%, and these were partially offset by an increase in construction output of 0.9% in April 2025.

There was an increase in Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) rates in England and Northern Ireland on 01 April 2025. HM Revenue and Customs' (HMRC's) Residential Property Transactions data estimates that there was a monthly decrease of 63.5% in UK residential transactions in April 2025, compared with March 2025. This followed a 61.6% rise in monthly UK residential transactions in March 2025 compared with February 2025.

Basically, a lot of timing-based differences to get stuff done before April due to a combination of tariffs and tax changes. But the longer term trend still shows growth.

This is why I really don’t like this monthly GDP reporting. A month is not really a long enough time horizon to be looking at data at this scale. People are arguing the toss over upwards and downwards swings of -0.3 to +0.3.

In reality we aren’t going to know for at least 6 months what the net impact of the April budget has been. I’ll come back in October and see how GDP is doing then.

Rising unemployment and a reduction in vacancies are an excellent indicator of the way the economy is trending. I fully expect the country to be in recession this time next year. The only growth Reeves is delivering is debt. The days of the Wilson/Callaghan government of the 70s will look like the good old days.

Big investments in infrastructure - trains, nuclear power, social housing- that will all pay dividends in the near future. we have to bite the bullet in the short term after 14 years of Tories losing all control and Trumps Tariffs kicking in.

Aww, poor golf club. Why don't they put the fees up 50p for everyone? Or even better, pay the tax out of their profits.

True, but regardless, that is a big drop for a single month.

Those projects certainly wont pay dividends in the near future.

Apart from social housing which will medium term. These schemes will take decades to come to fruition.

Those investments are all long-term and will do nothing to improve the economy, they add nothing to the country's output. It's akin to renovating your house when you've just lost your job. The country as a whole has to start earning it's keep and can't keep spending money like a sailor on shore leave.

So those developments just appear do they? Nobody is employed and pays tax and spends money to construct them? Materials to construct them are donated by charities not bought by companies that pay corporation taxes?
