Middle East Conflict | Netanyahu orders strikes on Gaza (p1161)

Israel are the example of why we might as well get rid of our nuclear weapons and spend the money on the here and now, given that Israel are telling us that they are constantly being attacked, on all sides, and yet they’ve had nuclear weapons since 1967. Seems the deterrent effect might be a tad overstated!
Can you speak Russisn? If not get the lessons booked.
What a complete load of toss.
Without Nukes, the US coukd back out of it's commitments to NATO and Russia would definately attack Europe.
See North Caucasus republics and Ukraine for details.

MAD works on the basis that participants are all able to think rationally. The Iranian regime do not conform to our notion of rational thinking .
They are lead by religious fanatics.
The eschatology of their belief system encourages them to seek conflict with Israel and the West to bring forward the return of the hidden Imam .
Look up Shia Twelverism and it’s eschatology.
The people in charge of this country actually believe this .
Let me know if you still think they should have access to nuclear weapons .
They haven’t got them, though.

When I included the US it was because of their role post WW2.
Undoubtably the creation of the state if Israel - but everything else is related to the defeat of the Ottoman empire - which had to happen.
Creating states with multiple major religious/ethnic minorities was a very bad move though with 20-20 hindsight.

Whilst the concept of MAD relies on rational thinking the practice does not, because it requires, alongside a belief that all parties would rationally believe nuclear war is catastrophic, a belief in the infallibility of the system and no system is infallible. Past performance is no guarantee of future success. Rationality is also in the eye of the beholder.

After seeing all these things, I can only express my respect for those who worked on China's nuclear weapon programe in the 1960s.

Israel have carried out a number of strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities over the past several decades, as well as targeting key individuals within their nuclear programme and of course developing the Stuxnet programme. Thankfully these actions have so far prevented a tyrannical regime in Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and hopefully this morning’s actions will prove just as effective.

So what you’re doing in posting what you did is simply highlighting the efficacy of Israel’s actions and indeed the justification for doing so.

I presume this wasn’t quite what you intended, but thanks all the same.
Tyrannical (exercising power in a cruel or arbitrary way.) Which country is doing that again? I dont see Iran nakedly killing tens of thousands. Dont get me wrong they are all bad, but saying Israel are in the right is ridiculous.

One consequence of the allies victory in WW1 was the collapse of the Ottoman empire and subsequent carve up of the Middle East.

Can't help but think that things would be better if the British and Americans had not been the prime movers and shakers in the area
Amen to that.
Can I get a Hallelujah?

Well they already do so it's kind of moot.

I'm glad they aren't in Syria, Libya and other failed states though.
Maybe so, doesn't mean i can't be concerned with the countries that have them already.
I mean, Israel, US and Russia are basket case countries

You can apply so much of this rationale to Israel, and they're being openly aggressive to other countries in the region

Maybe neither country should have nukes

I think invading Ukraine, which is in Europe, was a bit of a clue.
So you think invading a country on their own borders equipped largely with Cold War era Ex-Soviet weapons is a good analogue for rolling through Germany and France with their fifth generation combat aircraft and armour that, in the conflict you site, has been shredding the tiny number of modern tanks Russia has been able to deploy? OK…

I hope the Iran situation doesn't distract too much from aid gettng to the starving and dying innocents in Gaza.

It's incredible how cruel Israel is.
I watched some of Louis Theroux last night on tv.
I find it very difficult to take for any length of time.
Zionism and Zionist logic ( if you can call it logic) or dogma, is prehistoric as far as I’m concerned.
Israel was always going to end up this way, right from its ill conceived conception.
The land they were granted wasn’t empty and no declaration of being the chosen people and granted it by god, in this day and age should sit well with anyone with any sort of sanity.

What is happening in The West Bank and the open intentions of the Zionist frontiers people regarding Gaza and The Lebanon and beyond is depressing when you think of the suffering of a people they regard as sub human.

Terrorism is terrible and 07/10 was an abomination but looking at the draconian check points separating people from their homes and compare it with British troops on the streets of Belfast or Derry.
Look at the trouble that caused and the recruitment it drove in opposition.
I’m not saying any of that is right, what I’m saying is what is currently happening in Israel is 100 times worse than anything a nationalist community in The North may have perceived to be a subjugation of their civil rights.

The Zionist does not regard Palestinians as human. They don’t care what it takes. Netanyahu and his government, and the IDF as his vehicle want conflict as justification to do what they have always wanted to do.

And these people are abandoned by the world.
I think Israeli actions will drive underground resistance because people have nothing else to lose. Call it whatever you wish, but don’t deny why it’s happening.

I have been steadfast in my opposition to Israel's actions in Gaza. The response, involving the slaughter of innocent civilians, has been wholly disproportionate. While the notion of giving Jewish people a homeland in the wake of the Holocaust was admirable, the displacement of the Palestinians was inevitably going to lead to endless cycles of war, and bloodshed. So, my opinion on Israel as a nation is somewhat mixed, as I can see why it was founded initially, but it baffles me why the politicians involved in the establishment of a Jewish state couldn't see that displacing Arabs, in a region populated solely by Arabs, would be incredibly problematic. I sympathise with some of the views on here, but I cannot defend the Iranian Ayatollah. The systematic repression of women is abhorrent. Ultimately, the logic used here is very 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend', but I don't think that applies here. Iran, with their fundamentalist ideology, having nuclear weapons would be concerning, although, wouldn't personally advocate for any sort of military intervention in the Middle East (fear that the Trump administration will go down that route). Interventionism has demonstrably failed, repeatedly. Effectively, the rulers of Israel, Iran, and the de facto leaders of Palestine (in Hamas) are all evil, and the sad state of affairs is that the people have to face the brunt of their complete amorality, not them. While we shouldn't directly intervene, I think the best course of action would be to halt the sale of armaments to Israel, and sanction the states and organisations that arm Hamas. We cannot topple the Iranian regime, just have to ensure international standards are upheld, and any expansionism is vehemently opposed. Hopefully, the people of Iran will rise up, and eliminate the theocracy. Would be some progress in that region. Unfortunately, rhetoric surrounding a 'two-state solution' is not feasible, for various reasons. Such a difficult situation to navigate. Sadly, bloodshed will continue for the foreseeable future, with no end in sight. As I said before, the tragedy is that, often, those responsible for these endless cycles of war are often insulated, living in their Presidential Palaces, or equivalent, while civilians, especially Gazans, die on the streets.
