I'm sure there are other reasons but I would imagine two main reasons for not doing it are it would cost time and money for something already stated would be lost when the stands are redeveloped anyway and also, it's doing a job already and you are gonna build something and cause disruption and expense to build something that isn't better than what's already there, just to save a headache further down the line? headache or not, they managed with the other two stands.

I always believed that the catenary cable ring mechanism was keeping the roofs taut by pulling the ends of them together using lateral forces. If you cut that then each roof (old roofs) would need fixing to a stanchion to prevent them moving upwards as otherwise they are just dangling from the backstay and forestay cables above them. A good gust of wind would flip them like a bin lid. All the tension forces on those would be hugely increased too.

This post from a few days ago might help explain how it works.

It stays and it is there on the south stand as well. There is a second one above the new roof that holds the new roof. It acts as a ring of tension and takes all 4 sides to complete the forces.

I like the videos and look forward to the old roof going and blue seats going in. The new North stand has the potential to be the best end in the country if it’s not full of corporate types. Maybe giving 18-25 year olds preference would do the trick.

I don't know much about construction/ demolition but I must admit I thought the old roof might have come down a bit quicker once the first piece came down earlier this week

I’ve mentioned this before but the latest @cpoverview vid made me think of it again.

If they fixed that junction plate in the cable net to the Colin Bell stand roof (and do the same at the south stand end) you could do away with the cable net in the south and north stand.

Obviously you’d have to do the same in the west stand.

It looks like a pretty straightforward job to attach the plate to the stand because it’s already in position.

Each stand would then have an independently supported roof which would make expansion easier down the line (and generally just make it all a bit tidier)

The cablenet is a system that relies upon each component The actual ring is pretension so can’t be broken The purpose of a cablenet is to allow a light weight roof, look at the difference in the beams between the old roof and the new one
They had to tie the cablenet to the new structure before they could remove the old supports which were built around, it was an ingenious solution and they had to be sure that nothing went wrong during the load transfer in fact they had a lady come from Belgium to analyse the cables, apparently she was actually listening to the forces in the cables and made a accurate prediction on how much movement would occur

Went to Asda, Eastlands this Afternoon to get the beer in.

The stand looked great even as it currently is.

Once the portakabins, the scaffolding, construction machinery, etc has gone, and it's all paved and landscaped outside the the stand and hotel, it will look superb.
