82 | Rico Lewis - 2024/25

Meh.

I think that Lewis barely fits the role of some sort of backup/squad player at City. IMO Lewis is at best a Championship-level player.

When playing a game where we don't care if we lose - or coming in as a sub when we're far ahead in the game and we cannot possibly lose, Rico fits in.

The problem with the above is that Rico eats a squad spot. If someone is injured or needs a rest and we need to start Rico in a game that we need to win, possibly against strong opposition - we're fucked. Because Rico isn't good enough.

Don’t get me wrong, my view on him is very very similar to yours. I’m just trying to provide a more generous take.

Phil Neville vibes. I think within 2 years he’ll get itchy feet and (should) want to move to play more. But I do agree he has a useful squad role to play, and there’s a natural emotional reaction to want to support academy lads.

His playing time has gone up unbelievably, with Pep at the helm this trend is sure to continue.

In 5 years time we'll still be getting "He's a prospect" and "Stop being a **** suggesting he's not good enough".

He’s more like a modern day Geoff Lomax when he plays at right back, when he’s in the middle he’s like a little boy lost. Would he get much game time with any of the top 6 teams ?, I very much doubt it. Probably a nice fella, committed and good to have around but he’s not good enough.

Remember when Benjamin Mendy was in our squad - after his injury - and he was absolute shit? And yet, for whatever unfathomable reason, Pep gave Mendy occasional starts?

I think that Pep is the best manager in world football - but at times, Pep gets it wrong. Playing Mendy - or in the case of our current squad - Lewis - is almost always wrong.

Huge season coming up for him. He looked very promising when he first appeared on the scene. But he regressed badly last season. I'd love to see him push on and become a regular in the team. Like most, I love to see academy lads coming through. I'm just not sure where he'll fit in; he's clearly not a right back. And with Cherki and Reijnders arriving, we have a lot of midfielders now (even if there's a couple of departures).

From what I understand he is a good lad, and he comes across as completely committed on the pitch (which should be the norm for all professionals but isn’t).
He’s a useful asset for helping to control a game when we are up I think, and bearing in mind all the different comps we are in, number of games etc, I think he can play a useful lesser role.

My point was more about Rico himself. For example not being involved in the Cup Final can’t have felt good, and I wonder whether he’ll reach a point himself where he wants more footy.

If/when he does leave the club, it is an open question I think about what level of clubs would come in for him.
