Club World Cup - Summer 2025

Chelsea and City probably have small numbers of travelling supporters out in the USA. The BBC seems desperate to convince everyone that there is apathy for the tournament when most likely the Chelsea crowd was low because it was played in the afternoon of a working day between sides that have not got a big travelling support. The Boca game later in the day had a much larger crowd with 10s of thousands of Boca fans.

All major sporting events are staggered across the day for TV.
I could only think of one ground over here that would be full to capacity if games were played on a Monday afternoon..... Anfield (as long as it didn't clash with signing on)

I googled the 1966 World Cup:

"The lowest attendance at the 1966 World Cup was 13,790. This was for the match between Switzerland and Spain at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield.

The match between the Soviet Union and North Korea at Ayresome Park in Middlesbrough also had a low attendance of 23,006, according to a website about Ayresome Park. This venue had the lowest average attendance of all the World Cup venues according to European Football Statistics."

I’m not sure the organisers will want large groups of fans from the teams themselves. Imagine ultras from a South American team and a European team clashing somewhere. I think if this competition takes off it’ll kick off big time eventually in the future, it’s just the tribal nature of some clubs. Especially without crowd segregation in the stadiums. Can’t see the UK ever hosting it.

shhhh, never let reality and facts get in the way of a good narrative
Exactly, champions league was largely considered a success, despite some heavy one sided games in each stage of the competition. I don't doubt we won't see a few more during this one considering the gulf in class between some sides. It shouldn't mean the comp is a dud

The Boca v Benfica game last night was fantastic with a great crowd and a late equaliser from Nicholas Otamendi. Crowd was 55,000. No reports I can see on the BBC though.

Got credited with a £41 refund this morning from FIFA without having to do anything.

They did send an email a couple of weeks ago saying there may be a reduction but I never got round to looking at it. Money back I didn’t expect.

It’s as if what they really want is a summer champions league for European teams but in the States. Well maybe it’s City that have been lucky being at the top when wealthy competitions are revitalised & they’ll be playing catch up.

Sneering English media - I think you could apply that to most of Europe.
A Dortmund fan told me that they're bringing 1000 fans and that the German media want them or Bayern to win the competition

In contrast the first headline on the "impartial" BBC football website is "50,000 empty seats at the Chelsea game"

I think we all know which fans those type of headlines are aimed at

Dynamic pricing at its best
