Best Indian Restaurant in Stockport/Heaton Moor?

Do people still go to Rusholme for a curry ?
Couldn’t think of anything worse
Tbh no, I haven’t been for 30 years, I just remember it being good curry down there. But having a good one in walking distance sort of defeats any reason to go Rusholme, I just assumed it was still a thing.

Had a half decent one about three years ago after a game as I was led there by the person I went to the match with, but it was no better than that, and that’s definitely an outlier; it’s really gone downhill over the course of this century.

The commercial rents along the strip got silly about twenty years ago which seemed to lead to a race to the bottom. I also wonder if our move from Maine Road played a part, not just because of fewer numbers of punters before and after games but also because of the huge reduction in viable drinking establishments in the area which means people need to travel there simply for a meal rather than after a local night out.

Another factor will have been the shift in core student housing away from terraced houses towards purpose built accommodation blocks which are much less a part of the local community, along with the huge increase in the number of students from South East Asia who are less likely to got out for a curry after a few years.

Things change, nothing lasts forever.

I’ve been going to the Shahbaaz (Curry cottage) in Bradley Fold (technically Radcliffe) for 33 years. Just had one tonight.

Still the best I’ve had outside Rusholme.
Yes, consistently good grub in there. Aarman at the end of my street is damn good as well but a bit pricey. Set meal for 1 @£15 on a sunday not too bad though.
I've been having This and That's rice and 3 a lot lately; Chick curry, Lamb Nehari and bombay spuds knocks the spots off anything else i've had recently.

Shahbaaz ain’t cheap. There’s a cheaper one off Stopes Road (can’t remember the name) that people kept recommending to me but I thought it was average at best. The Aarman pissed me off one NYE when it was lockdown and people were being kept waiting over an hour to pick up their curries (no sit in diners at the time). It was a right farce so I just walked out and have never been back. The only reason we wanted to try them was because everyone rated them.

Surely quality first over price ?

Thanks for that. I never really understood why the curry mile had died a death but every thing you say above sounds plausible.

It's all part of the shift away from pub culture I guess. The curry house was often part of a night out in pubs. I hardly ever go to the pub myself anymore. Students and young people generally are a different breed now in terms of how they spend there evenings and weekends.
