Running thread

It must cost a fortune. Do you know how much? If you can afford to piss so much money up the wall and are happy to do so then go for it.

I like a few beers too. Health and financial impacts prevent over indulgence.

Well, work related piss ups are free, I have a company card and can rinse it for as much as I want in posh restaurants and bars in London - whilst this is a massive perk and I can get away taking the Mrs and pals to places it does also involve taking now younger clients out for a drink up when I really can’t be arsed!

Gigs and local drinks are totting up and it’s not just beers that I end up buying ,so yeh it’s to much money and a negative on health. Looking forward to the long break.

I would love to run to work - good on you mate.

Unfortunately, I'm a sweaty bastard so it would be unfair to inflict this on the people around me. I know that some workplaces have showers which is great for encouraging healthy behaviours among staff.

I used to live and work in London. As part of my job, I had free access to the swimming pools in Westminster - and there was one almost next door to my place of work. I would cycle or run about 8 miles from Hackney / Haringey to Westminster then go for a swim & shower before work. I absolutely loved this routine and it was such a positive way to start the day.
I run at least 4 times to work and back, got rid of the car and haven’t looked back. Little backpack to carry what I need and get a shower at work. Complete over 100 miles a month now and not having to drag my arse back out in the evening after a long day in work, all done by 5pm and wish I’d done it sooner.

How are we getting on in the heat, lads? I made a little video on the topic recently. Top tip: get out early!

Also, I'm on the lookout for recommendations for shorts - especially for race day. Something comfortable with no inner lining. I need one or more zip pockets for my key, earbuds and a couple of gels. Bonus points if they look good and/or make me as fast as Kipchoge.

Can certainly vouch for getting out earlier, but even on a non-running day like today, we walked our dog around 9ish this morning and you could already feel the warmth!

Got out yesterday morning around 7am and that wasn't too bad but you could certainly feel it

Don't think I can help with the shorts unfortunately, I just have a couple of pairs that have tights built in but they're pretty comfy

Apologies stu, only just got round to watching yer vid.
A couple of bits to add, the wet buff is a good tip, also your hat, soak that in water and it's great for cooling down.
You know I love my early morning runs, earlier the better for me simply because you get the place pretty much to yourself, no problems with cows in central Manchester, it's more foxes I see and the odd badger, but just like the smack heads that are often out and about up to no good, they leg it as soon as you get near!!
Electrolytes and hydration wise, I've started using a new product called electro bullets( https://xmiles.co.uk/products/electro-bullet-chews) Which are ace, I did use salt sticks but these new ones are a different level, I did ten miles this morning with just one and was totally fine with just the one.

Shorts wise, take a look at ASICS metafuji trail shorts, loads of pockets and about £30 on sportshoes, although they do have a lining in them, why don't you want lining? Don't tell me you have lucky running boxers!! Running commando with just the lining is ace for staying cool

That is just awesome!

Nice one Gaz. Yeah, not too many issues with wildlife in town, although as someone pointed out in a comment in one of my vids, you can still get ticks in the long grass in the city.

Cheers for the tips on electrolytes and shorts. I'll have a look at the Asics Metafuji. I just find that the inner lining can cause friction for me and irritate my crevices! So I prefer to wear my lucky boxers / Y-fronts underneath. I guess that's the price you pay for having unfeasibly large bollocks.

Just trying to find them mate - it is the Fujitrail shorts?

@Stuuuuuu haha ok big balls suit yerself, I did have a look for some of the ASICS shorts but they in 'short' supply, there are quite a few different brands of the same kind of thing, mizuno etc and apparently decathlon do a good pair, they design is basically a running belt/pouch type thing stitched around the waist

@Stuuuuuu watched all the vid now(after a couple of rewinds to watch yer comedy fall!!) I really wouldn't get too down hearted about the 1kg, it's nothing that mate, water weight is a big factor and as you say diet is huge. 71kg tho!! Jesus I'm sure my legs alone weigh that!!

Well, everyone on YouTube likes to review running shoes so I thought I'd go against the grain and do a comparison of running socks!

Some prices are bonkers so I wanted to investigate whether or not it's worth spending money on socks, and if so, which ones.

Just for @Gaz76 I've recycled my comedy tumble as I was actually testing out a pair of More Mile socks at the time.

Haha not quite as good as your first tumble mate but still very entertaining!!
Socks was a funny one to pick, but it makes a lot of sense to do the vid, there's literally hundreds of different running socks brands out there.
I must have at least 60 pairs stuffed in a couple of draws, I'm currently working my way through a batch of the more miles ones that I got cheap, I find they don't last that long in the toe department(no matter how short I keep what's left of my toenails).
The thinner the better for me in this weather, and the opposite in winter, ASICS do great trail socks that I use in the winter.
It's all about the longevity for me, they never really seem to last that long, hilly do great socks but they usually only last about ten washes and then they are crap, back to the ASICS, I would say they last the longest.

I have a few pairs of Rahhint socks which came recommended when I started running, and although I don't know any different, I must say that they're very supportive and apparently have something in the design that supports the base of your calf/achilles

I think this is actually a really useful video, as i imagine this is something that a lot of people don't pay much attention to (or just dont consider), but happily pay a fortune for their trainers

Yeah, durability is obviously a big factor, otherwise we end up buying new ones all the time. Maybe I'll follow up the video a bit further down the line to see how these ones have lasted. Good to know about the Asics.

What I didn't mention in the vid is that I sometimes literally just wear a pair of City football socks right up the the knee cos I'm so paranoid about getting ticks when I run off-road around the rural Cumbrian trails...

Yeah, I used to wear the Hilly Twin Skins but I found that they got all bunched up around the toes so I gave up on them.

Do you have any top favourites that you use for races?
