The Squad planning thread

Of course you can. It just means that we have to accept the following season as a write off.

Ederson, Akanji, Ake, Gundogan & Kovacic are easily replaced by players currently at the club.

Nunes & Grealish would need replacing in the market but I personally don't think it's too difficult to do
But I’m not prepared to accept the following season as a write off just to move that many players out. It’s unnecessary

I honestly think that Nunes has played beyond expectation as a full back at the end of last season and in this tournament BUT given we don’t have the fastest centre backs we simply cannot afford to play with 2 full backs that high up the pitch. So I think we do need to buy a more defensively minded right back. Akanji showed last night that his positioning and marking is not of the required standards. And I now think we need a keeper who is good with his feet but is good at saving too. I think up front we are ok but probably need better defensive keeper and right back, and a super quick central defender, to allow us to play to our current strengths and then some.

The most ridiculous post I’ve seen for a long time - probably a reaction to last night’s result. No way can any club change that many players in one window. Its not a computer game ffs

how do you replace them in time for the new season?? Sure, switch a few out IF there is a useful replacement but posts like this need moving to the caf
It’s becoming ridiculous on here now. Posters wanting 10-14 players out the door. You may as well write the next two seasons off if we did that.

What happens next season if we are poor again, do we sell half the team again. It’s like fifa.

they also want another 3 or 4 in tbf, so make it 18 out..

Let Gundo go Turkey, go get Gibbs white, keep Bernardo one more season let him leave on a free that’s the midfield rebuilt.

You don't necessarily sell all of them, but the top line is players, that are not good enough here anymore, and you need to replace.

The second line is players that are available, and I would let go for the right price. (I.E if Barca offered 40m for Silva)

And the last line is players that I would not necessarily have for sale, but if an offer came that was too good to pass up, I would let them go. (Juve offered 55m for Savinho)

I would be happy if akanji, stones , Kovacic, Gundogan and Bernardo left. But it won’t happen. They will all stay and start. Once they ALL injured we might see the guys we bought.

All I can say to that worldly insight is

REALLY???

Players now presumably leave on their obligatory holiday for 3 weeks, so unless Viana had the 'difficult conversations' before they left he's going to have very little time.

Jack's stock must have risen. Only half joking.

Currently next season looks transitional, we've got a lot of young players who will be here long after Pep's gone.

But Pep being who he is will rage against the dying of the light.

The easiest way of reducing the squad is to let go players who he doesn't play or who are unavailable a lot or currently.

So Khusanov, Nico G, Reis, Stones, Grealish, Walker, McAtee

That brings us to about 24 players.

Emerson Bettenelli Ortega
Nuñes Akanji Ake Dias Gvardiol Alt Nouri
O'Reilly, Lewis, Rodri, Reinjders, Gundogan, Kovacic, Bernardo, Foden, Cherki, Doku, Savinho, Marmoush, Haaland, Echeverri, Bobb

Wouldn't be my squad but

Whether you accept it or not is irrelevant. IF the squad remains as it is without any further in's or outs then it's inevitable.

We simply don't have enough genuine quality or strength in depth in key positions.

How am I backtracking?

This is exactly what I said in the original post. I would get rid of Ederson, Akanji, Nunes, Stones, Grealish, Kovacic, and Gundogan, as they have shown to be liabilities in the squad this year.

I would consider offers on Bernardo, Rico, and Ake. But I wouldn't let them go unless it was at a fair value.

And on players like Marmoush, Savinho, Nico G (If Pep isn't going to play him, what's the point?), and Dias. I wouldn't openly have them for sale, but if an offer came that was too good to pass up, we should consider it.

Let’s just disagree on this. We’ve a huge squad within which there is a great group of excellent players - and 11 of them will be the main first team. However, they didn’t play together in the Cwc as pep was rotating in every game because of the conditions & with an eye on the new season

We didn’t arrive at this point in one season, and it won’t be resolved in one window.

A point worth considering is that some players, lads who have been heroes, might just choose to stay and sit out their contracts, meaning change and improvement on the pitch takes even longer. If the season proves underwhelming again, it could sour relationships and sully memories.

So who are you going to replace all these players with. It’s easy to discard but you need to have a plan for replacement- not just a list of who you want to get rid of.

Sorry but the last part of this isn't a hot take or controversial, it's just awful. How can we possibly even "consider" a sale of 2 players who have had half a calendar year at the club and another who has just completed one full season at the age most people are just finishing college?

I'll defend a large amount of these players too. Ederson, though isn't perfect, is the perfect keeper for us. His body language exudes energy that makes him look far lazier than he actually is and people go too heavy on that.
Nunes is the perfect utility player and gives everything he can, even though it might not be everything we need. These players are so valuable.

7 players being labelled as liabilities is strong and, for me, doesn't portray the players themselves but more several different deep rooted issues that could in fact be an amalgamation of things like, desire, age, system, fatigue, god knows what else.

The club have acted incredibly well since January, admitted error and attempted to fix wrong doings. It's the 1st of July today and people are acting as though if we don't fix everything in the next 5 hours, our entire future is doomed.

This happens every summer though. Even coming off the back of successful seasons, people on here claim two thirds of the squad isn't good enough and needs to be changed.

There are inevitably going to be loans, particularly if we are unable to shift players we'd rather not keep around. What we don't want, however, is players going out on loan after the other clubs have had their pre-seasons or, worse yet, after the season has started. It's then much harder to settle and means the loanee is playing catch up and less likely to have a good season.
