My understanding is that the changes by FIFA were to spread interest and reach a wider global football audience to develop the game. The number of participants was increased and the qualifying criteria for entry were also changed, so essentially a new competition under the old name.
I havn't a clue how well it has succeeded in its aims? I fail to see how you concluded from my posts that I or anyone else believe "the club world cup is bigger than any other competition out there".
I do believe the prize money is now the highest of any club football competition. Others have commented on attendances and tv audiences. However I presume the CWC equally targeted generating interest in places with large populations and potential for growth like in Africa, where it is harder to measure.
It may not be your cup of tea but the CWC has been enthusiastically embraced by supporters of many of the participating clubs. In future more clubs from all parts of the world will aspire to qualify .... and you call this parochial with your Eurocentric outlook?
