Your Most Unhinged Football Take?

I agree. If you watch that goal, he doesn't really "beat" anyone, he just has half a yard on two Arsenal defenders as they come to try and pincer him, which makes it look more dramatic. As you say, Seaman did poorly with a near post shot, goalies really shouldn't get beat the near post. Also if Bergkamp hadn't missed the penalty, it would not have been a winner

Didn't giggs come on as a sub and was running against knackered players ?
Bearing in mind the offside law was different then , watch scholes reaction when it went in

Jordan Pickford's shite and Everton would be better off without him.

He's alright for England, a decent reaction stopper, and a loudmouth, but absolutely shite at everything else. A bit like Shay Given ended up being during his time with us, only with worse distribution than Kasper Schmeichel.

I don't even go along with the jokes about him having t-rex arms. It doesn't matter how many times I watch him, he manages to make almost every goal he concedes look like it's just crept inside the post, regardless of whether it has or hasn't. His positioning and footwork when getting to shots is abysmal.

He always knows how to pull off a despairing dive for the TV cameras to make it look like he's tried really hard to get there, and then they show the replay and the ball's crossed the line basically in the middle of the net.

I'll always come back to the free-kick Gundogan scored against Everton at Goodison in 2023. A good keeper saves it by using his feet to get across the line before stretching out a hand to tip it over. Pickford jumps with both arms from a standing start and ends up miles away from the ball.

Rubbish.

I recogniz(s)e these are very “yank” ideas but in fact they’re really more Canadian, as I borrowed many from hockey . . .

1. Football should move to a two-central referee system instead of one.

2. The clock should not be a mystery. Time should stop when the ball is dead and restart when it isn’t.

3. Halves should have 90 second mid period hydration breaks, essentially creating four quarters.

4. Football should start tracking “second”’assists (assisting the assister).

5. OGs should be credited to the last offensive player who touched the ball.

Have at it then.

Fully agree. He’s fucking toss.

Man City's 2018-19 Premier League win is the greatest league victory of all time and Bernardo Silva should have won the Ballon d'or for that season. Only a corrupt decision (Llorente's handball goal) stopped City to have the greatest season any club can have had in the history of football. We could and should have won everything that season!!

Messi isn't the best player of all time. He's played at a time where his club team had all time amazing players to occupy defenders and create spaces and also where he gets referee protection against fouls and plays on carpets for pitches.

The all time GOATS are Maradona and Pele and it isn't even close.

No player from say pre-1990 would get into a current world 11 or even a world 25 squad if they were in their prime today.
Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini started pre 90s but played into the 90s and would both walk into a current World XI in their prime. Van Dijk is an absolute clogger compared to those 2.

Same with Maradona and Van Basten - they'd get in no problem whatsoever.

The larger 18 yard box should be scrapped for a hockey style semi circle, e.g. 14 yards radius. Getting penalties in the corners of the current box, especially when a player is facing away from goal or running into a corner, is far too big a prize for the position on the pitch. A dangerously located free kick should be reward enough.

This one is practically unworkable: if a team has 6+ players behind the edge of the box not including goalie (18 yard or revised semi circle!!), the attacking team can't be offside

It should be banned for investment groups to own more than one club

Bollocks to the hydration breaks and players should be able to whack each other over the head with a stick.

I mean, it’s subjective as to who the best player of all time is, but this is a bit silly. Of course it’s close.

But is Gareth Taylor one of them?
Most definitely. I remember seeing him missing a penalty against Oldham when they beat City 2-1 at Maine Road. I never terribly rated Taylor, but even by his standards that game was pants. Oldham's winning goal was a header from a guy who was about 5'2", so how the City defender was beaten to the cross is beyond me.

Baresi and Maldini were amazing defenders. Van Dijk is pretty good, but I'm not sure he is at their level.

City winning just one Champions League between 2017-2023 is a really disappointing and a poor reflection on Pep (still the greatest coach ever) and that City team (still the greatest domestic team ever).

We had the best team in Europe for most of that period and winning it just once should be considered a failure across those six years.
