Apparently Enya has been approached to sing her most famous hit at the hotel opening ceremony, 'Sail Away'.

Have to be honest, I haven't paid much heed to the "sails" up to now on any of the videos. My bad, as the hip young people would say. But I paid a bit more attention on the video posted today by @cpoverview



5:16 into the video. My question is; what are they supposed to add to the overall look of the hotel? To me, they just look like they don't belong there.

Aren't they primarily designed to provide extra privacy for the hotel room residents?

Is the entire front of the hotel going to be blanketed with them? If not, and your privacy suggestion is true, I can't see the point of only part of the frontage being done.

I'm not saying it's not the case; I honestly don't know.

It is a design feature, at the end of the day. Gordyola has already highlighted what they claim to add. The other part of this is, a hotel and office of this size don't necessarily sail through (why thank you) planning wothiut scrutiny, so having a distinctive look makes their process a bit easier.

That's not in the slightest theit prome purpose. An easy tag to add in, but yeah no chance that was in anybway a driving thought.

Fins will cover the entire facade of the hotel and commercial building images from the Design Statement there has been some changes as to the facade material , iirc but this confirms location
I don't see any reference to privacy in the DS not so say its isnt a consideration though

When I saw those fins I immediately thought they speak of the nautical heritage of Manchesters waterways and I appreciate how they are distributed following a principle set by an algorithmic design strategy. ;-)

In all seriousness they give a nice feature to what would otherwise be a bland and boxy design so fair play.

Building designs are boxy reflecting the most efficient way of organising internal space although the bee might disagree
