A better question might be is there a HOME GROWN right-back who is 50/60/70 mil BETTER than those 4. Getting a foreign one is out of the question so that leaves us with who? Livramento - 70m better than Nunes? Not in a million years. Who else? No one I can think of. I was all against Nunes until after Xmas where I think he improved massively. playing in a settled team with world class players around him will also make a huge difference where he wont be getting over ran and exposed all the time. Rico was fine playing there as a Walker back up in a great team as well. If Rodri stays fit, the whole team is calmer and doesn't get countered any way near as much. The whole defence is 200% better with him there. And now, when he isn't, we will have players (Rudolf and Nico) who can step in - where we will be more electrifying going forward (Cherki, Ait Nouri, on form Foden, Marmoush, unleashed Doku) to counter the counter attacks

Just names off football manager. None of us watch any of these plucked out names enough to say this and have no idea how they would perform in the Premier League in a Pep formation. I've seen enough of Dumfries to know he isn't anything special at all and wouldn't work in our team

Mate, if you stand still, others will not only catch up, they'll soon pass you by. We should've kept moving forward & kept clear sky blue water between us & the chasing pack.

With Pep believing our ageing squad had enough to go again & again, he allowed the chasing pack to not only to catch us up, but to pass us by too. Now it's City chasing the Dippers & ArseAnal, & scraping into the CL. That's how quickly things can change when you get complacent.

As Guardiola admitted & Khaldoon confirmed, we made a major fuck up by not pressing ahead with our succession planning last summer. Even then it was two summers too late imo.

We were so far off the pace last season & so far behind the elite teams in the PL & CL, it was shocking! Facts are facts & we paid the price for not acting when we had by far the strongest squad in world football. Now it's City playing catch up. Again, these are just the facts.

The last thing I want to see is us pointing to winning 4 in a row, & doing the treble. As ManUre & the Dippers have shown, having a great history is one thing, but fans want to win things now & in the future.

Our 4 in a row & the treble are in the past. You're only as good as your last season, & last season we were shit in comparison to what we've come to expect & won nowt. Please, let us not turn into the "istree" clubs we've come to loathe & laugh at.

Your second sentence rather contradicts your first, though I agree with your point about Dumfries (a fine player) being unsuitable for us and your more general point in post #2,484.

Don’t include me with you. If you only watch the premier league just say it. It’s not names of football manager these are just known names and if you think Dumfries isn’t anything special or whatever then I honestly have no idea what you are looking for at the full back position. Mendes and Hakimi are not available.

The usual bullshit: no one knows how they would do in the PL and under a pep formation. No one would know hakimi and Mendes the top of the top would do in the PL yet you wouldn’t say no if they were about to join would you?

I get why we have the same players for years. The board must be thinking like you. The same players we are crying for are moving to other clubs. No one knows how Wirtz would do in the PL yet certain clubs were interested and Liverpool took the gamble.

This is the bit I really don't get. They've admitted to the fuck up, started correcting it and then, according to today's report, simply stopped before finishing the job.

I'm honestly shocked that this issue is so divisive; I would have thought everyone would agree we need a right back and I can't really take anyone serious who says they think Nunes is good enough to do a job.

Maybe he is. Maybe we get away with it. But why hinge our season on such an unnecessary gamble when we've done most of the ground work?

I'm still inclined to think this is a bluff because the alternative is a bit of a head scratcher.

If you think Dumfries is anything other than a liability, you havent watched him enough. Take the worst aspects of Nunes, mix them with the worst aspects of Kyle Walker and you've got Dumfries.

Whats the alternative, there is barely a top RB out there, never mind one available. So the club are going to take a punt on some other young lad for 30/40m euros who may or may not be any better.

It's certainly a bit of a head-scratcher. Livramento ticks so many boxes, with him being talented, young & English. He'll serve us well for a decade if we go for him, so for me it wouldn't be an issue to pay £60m - £70m with or without add-ons to settle this problem position for years to come.

I'd much prefer us to get a specialist right back than shoe horn midfielders not considered good enough to play in their preferred position, as we did with Delph & Zinchenko.

This "can do a job" mentality is so unnecessary for Manchester City. We just need to stop messing about & complete this phase of our rebuild. Next summer, Bernardo will be out of contract & many older players will be entering the final year of theirs.

We should complete this transition phase with the acquisition of Livramento, dispense with those who have no future with us, & be ready to do the same with who's left to be dispensed with next summer.

I don't get why so many fans are happy for us to stop where we are & take the risk of Nunes, Lewis, Akanji & Stones playing right back for the season, when a big push for Tino Livramento would probably resolve this problem position for the next decade.

Trafford signing kinda relieves the HG situation, no? Of course we need to sell NHG players, but is not so critical

Also there are not very much good HG RBs we could sign

Newcastle won’t sell Livramento
Spence will sign a new deal with Spurs

Achaempeong is very promising player, but it seems Chelsea won’t sell him + is too young

I like Ryan Andrews from Watford, looks like a very promising player

I fear we were prepared to go with £60m plus up to £5m ish in add ons but Newcastle have probably been demanding around £80m guaranteed and City (rightly) just won’t go there. Maybe we hoped Newcastle would be more flexible but they’ve had an awful window so far and are probably in no mood to compromise.
