I still can't see Isak not going to Liverpool. Even if Newcastle don't get what they want, they can't honestly keep Isak given the situation, and Liverpool clearing the squad to make room for him. He would be more of a hindrance at this stage and will completely derail Newcastle's season.
At the same time, why should Newcastle sell without a replacement who is suitable enough? Bringing in such an inferior replacement could set the club back 5 years, especially with the likes of Chelsea and United buying top quality.
Newcastle would be far better served by retaining Isak and sending a clear message to the football world that they will not be pressured or undermined by Liverpool or by the player himself. Allowing him to leave and replacing him with an inferior option would risk significantly damaging the club’s reputation, both in terms of ambition and competitiveness.
There ought to be a clear rule in football that if a player refuses to play for the club that employs and pays their wages, that club should have the right to suspend his wages until he ends his strike. Furthermore, the player should be prohibited from representing any other team until the expiration of his existing contract. Such a measure would protect the integrity of contractual agreements and uphold fairness within the sport. Players and agents have far too much leverage in the sport.
I have great sympathy for Eddie Howe. He has handled this situation with absolute professionalism and dignity, showing nothing but class in his dealings with the media. It is just unfortunate that Newcastle United have been dragged into this embarrassment, brought about by Isak’s actions. The club, manager, and supporters deserve much better.
I wonder whether Isak will face the same reception that Jack Grealish did upon his departure from Aston Villa - despite Grealish leaving with nothing but dignity and class. I suspect not.
