It's Quiet the £250m return

Financially, Alvarez was a considerable sum, true, but we ended up burning out Haaland and then burning a substantial amount on a player a year older in January, by which time our season’s fate had already been sealed. Lots of deals look excellent business in isolation, to be sure, but when seen on the broader canvas, I’m not always sure they have the same effect.
Selling Alvarez for the amount and for someone who was angling to leave was good business. The main error was not sourcing a replacment /Haaland back up at the time - hence the overburdening on Erling.
Similar case with back up (never a replacement) for Rodri. Dreaded for several seasons him getting injured as our most integral player and low and behold. And we are still needing here.

Gundo doesn’t strike me as someone motivated by the big final payday. Seems like he lives a fairly modest life by footballer standards.

He probably wants to stay as he clearly loves City and given his coaching ambitions, wants to learn more from Pep.

I’ve said this loads of times on here before but it makes all kinds of sense for him to go onto the coaching staff after this season.
That’s the other aspect — he loves the club, and the club loves him. There’s no chance Pep will make him train with the youth team just because he doesn’t want to leave. If he does another season at City and then goes to Galatasaray, he’d earn something like €40–50 million. That’s a pretty nice pension fund.

Players generally angle to leave because they sense they are not going to play. The warning signs were there for Rodri, who was rarely rotated, and Haaland is allowed to play even when he’s hopelessly out of form; that in itself sends out the wrong message. Unless that changes we’ll have wasted more money on Gonzalez and next summer stories will surface about Marmoush leaving.

On Gundogan’s time at Barcelona.

“And I’m one of those who are not going to stay for the contract to cause problems for anyone.”

I think he’ll remain and, in truth, I’m not overly concerned about that. We know his contract ends next year and it won’t be renewed.
I think he will be gone by the end of the window.

Think he might stay, on the other hand before the Savinho thing we must of had a plan to get down to 17, including the Echeverri loan,so Gundogan or Akanji seem most likely for that.Unless the Savinho move has been in the pipeline a while.

I think we’ll have tried to move 2-4 of the senior players on but all unsuccessfully. Savinho is just going to end up the unfortunate fall guy in what could yet prove a ‘Baldrick’ of a rebuild plan.

Thing is, he’s rather likely to start the first three games of the season, so I just struggle to see him leaving in this window..
Said yesterday, we will soon see if Pep tries to send a message to anyone, for example Gundo or Akanji, with his selections and use of subs in first few games.

Maybe would mean we don't replace him. I have no issue with the rebuild in general though, think we ary building a very good young squad, that will only improve over the next year or 2.

I don’t for one minute think City expected to end the window with all 3 of Bernie, Gundo and Kova still at the club. Safe to say Bernie going nowhere, so it still wouldn’t surprise me if one of the other 2 left before it slams shut. Kova is back training, and even if not fully fit it wouldn’t stop a loan or sale taking place, it was only minor surgery rather than a huge injury. That said, I still think it’ll be Gundo who will leave.

I dont know what people see in our squad to think Gundo will be offloaded. With rodri and kovacic both out for a while yet, he's a cast iron starter for Saturday. Going nowhere and will prove to be a valuable squad member.
I think too many are basing their judgement on last season, for many players.
It was a relatively poor season for everyone, so singling out Gundogan, probably because of age, is wrong, IMO.
I think this is also true of judgements of Pep and of the squad. Last season hurt people who had become so used to overwhelming success.

Just seen Romano has retweeted his earlier message about City in for Rodrygo when Savio leaves, usually means he’s been given a heads up from one of the agents that it’s happening.

I think the only explicit messages sent have been to Grealish, McAtee, and Ortega. Guardiola will continue to place his utmost trust in ‘his players’ and leave the departure gate to Viana. I agree, though, that both who plays and who does not will be of interest.

I’m not against the idea of a rebuild, it was overdue, but it generally makes sense to have cleared the existing site before the new materials arrive.

Don't think that's possible though when a team is a successful as we are with players on highly paid contracts, it's natural we might have to wait for some of those to expire,as long as we are rebuilding in the background and now we are, that's what it has to be

I suspect that some thought it was going to be easier to shift players, only to find they have been collectively stonewalled. I’m going to be intrigued to see the final squad in September and then what lessons have been learned.
