Selling Alvarez for the amount and for someone who was angling to leave was good business. The main error was not sourcing a replacment /Haaland back up at the time - hence the overburdening on Erling.Financially, Alvarez was a considerable sum, true, but we ended up burning out Haaland and then burning a substantial amount on a player a year older in January, by which time our season’s fate had already been sealed. Lots of deals look excellent business in isolation, to be sure, but when seen on the broader canvas, I’m not always sure they have the same effect.
Similar case with back up (never a replacement) for Rodri. Dreaded for several seasons him getting injured as our most integral player and low and behold. And we are still needing here.
