Gianluigi Donnarumma | Done deal according to Romano

This quote is coming after Donnarumma rejected a new contract on lower wages, so whilst Luis Enrique may feel like this, they were planning on renewing his contract.
Considering they have been chasing Chevalier for a long time, and gave him a contract offer on lower wages probably means that they wanted him to stay as back-up

I think the intention was fight with Ederson for 1st choice this season and he'll be in a strong position next season.

The Donnarumma availability wasn't expected but the scenario is still the same this season, the HG element is important though, so it's definitely not wasted as we have no non-HG space.

What does change is next season, if Trafford isn't getting game time he may want to leave but that's a next season problem. This season is still almost identical with Ederson or Donnarumma.

We're not going to spend £50m on Donnarumma and £250k a week on his wages with the idea of making him fight it out with Trafford. He'll be coming in as number one and will be staying there.

It's pretty obvious that if Trafford knew this was going to happen he would have just gone to Newcastle.

Fuck me he's only 26, I thought he'd been around for years and was in his mid 30s.
This makes even more sense now.
Get it done.
Told my dad he was 26 earlier and he was shocked, thought he was in his 30s. Easy to forget he was AC Milan number 1 age 16 at virtually the same size he his now.

As others have said, if you get the chance to sign one of the world’s best in their position then you don’t say no. He’ll bring a fear factor in net that few others can. Miles ahead of Trafford atm. Hopefully it gets done.

When it comes to goalkeepers beimg good with their feet, Ederson is in a world of his own, he's an absolute freak.

Truth be told, He's irreplaceable when it comes to his footwork, no matter what keeper we sign after Ederson it's always going to be a downgrade when it comes to a ball playing goalkeeper.

We'd have the same issue with James Trafford if he was to take over as No.1 after Ederson in my opinion, we'll need to sign another goalkeeper anyway once Ederson does leave so we may as well sign the best shot stopper in the world of he's available. I understand your points though.
This. I keep reading how we will have to change our style if we sign Donnarumma, like it’s an issue we don’t face next summer anyway. It’s Ederson for one more season and then he’s 100% gone. We are in exactly the same position in a years time but probably without the option of signing the world-class replacement that Donnarumma is.

I love Eddie, I have backed him 100% on here and if he would sign a new contract I would be delighted. He wants out though and I would rather it be now and us sign Donnarumma instead of him leaving in 12 months, Donnarumma being elsewhere and us crossing all body parts hoping and praying that Trafford can do the job.

If this deal is there to be done, we must do it.

Yep, little chance he’s been completely blindsided by this imo.
Depends, on the timing and when it all started to unfold.

Trafford would have been well aware of the route City were planning on taking before he signed. He'd have been told there was work going on behind the scenes to sign Donna.

I doubt that would have been part of the sales pitch. Not even sure the club might temselves have been actively planning it at the time.

They may well have expected Galatasaray not to cough up and Eddie to see out his final year. I think they would have given Trafford some indication of a pathway to no.1, which I doubt involved signing an established keeper for the next 5 or so years.

Why would he come to City, with the ambition of being England's number one, knowing he'd be feeding off Donnarumma's scraps for the duration of his contract?

When the alternative was going to Newcastle, easily usurping Pope and playing Champions League football.
