It's not really that straight forward though.

One keeper would completely change our style of play and be on astronomical wages. The other costs way more than a backup should and clearly had no intention of being a long term backup.

I think there’s genuine belief that he will be our future number 1, but also as you say, the club knew that once Newcastle moved for him, we would need to activate our clause because we know he’s going to be worth more than that. So he either becomes city’s number 1 because he’s good enough to be or we sell him and make a profit.
