More penalties awarded for holding in the box this season*

So they showed an example of what a pen for holding in pen area is or we just going to take the referees guess work
A reason to not give them say City or easier to give say United.
Ref and var discretion so rule interpretation rather than actual rule clarification.

I think what skewers a lot of people’s thinking on the leniency or otherwise of referees on this issue, is you repeatedly see close up replays on TV of excessive holding, without the all important context of whether the ball is in play or not.

Players aren’t all complete idiots. They know they can’t give a penalty away for their actions before a corner has been taken. So they basically have a free pass to chuck a player to the ground before a corner, knowing the referee’s options are to allow the corner to be taken, with the player out of action on the floor, or halt the corner and give them a meaningless warning.

It’s a difficult position for the referee to be in. They have been told this season to let the corner play out whenever possible and deal with anything that happens once the ball is in play.

We’ll see how it goes. But if players keep the vast majority of their shenanigans to just prior to the corner being taken, there really isn’t an awful lot any referee can do.

Haaland should get 10 a game if this is implemented. We really need to go full Nottingham Forest and compile a video compilation of all the blatant holding of the big man in the box that gets ignored every single week its honestly ridiculous. I don't even mind him doing a Neymar routine for a few weeks every time he's touched so the ref is forced to make a decision on it.

Do refs go on a pre season piss up and decide which rules they are going to enforce and which rules will be ignored ? Surely the rules should be the rules and enforce accordingly
Of course they go on the piss and decide which teams in red they should favour. Goes on every season and this one will be no different.

howard webb has made it clear as mud refs will not intervene at corner kicks but will work on theory of club badge over rules common sense

It’s how VAR is implemented that will be the real issue. At the moment, it doesn’t get involved if both players are at it. Let’s see what happens in this new directive.

I can see this being the Arsenal tactic.

Bring the clock down by wrestling and having lectures from the ref before the attack is allowed to take place.

It already looks like they’ve been working on a new time wasting tactic around the new 8 second goalkeeper rule.

Twice today they blocked the United goalkeeper from releasing the ball, knowing that the referee would be obliged to give a free kick and slow the game down.

Ok the United keeper was weak but Arsenal players impeded him from getting to the ball. It looks like against them teams will need to put a protective shield of players round the goalkeeper to stop all he physical rough stuff.

Grest news for Rangers.

Their cheating brethren **** refs and var have already given them two for fuck all. Dirty cheating bastards.
