I think what skewers a lot of people’s thinking on the leniency or otherwise of referees on this issue, is you repeatedly see close up replays on TV of excessive holding, without the all important context of whether the ball is in play or not.
Players aren’t all complete idiots. They know they can’t give a penalty away for their actions before a corner has been taken. So they basically have a free pass to chuck a player to the ground before a corner, knowing the referee’s options are to allow the corner to be taken, with the player out of action on the floor, or halt the corner and give them a meaningless warning.
It’s a difficult position for the referee to be in. They have been told this season to let the corner play out whenever possible and deal with anything that happens once the ball is in play.
We’ll see how it goes. But if players keep the vast majority of their shenanigans to just prior to the corner being taken, there really isn’t an awful lot any referee can do.
