Rico Lewis | Set to sign a new 5-year contract (pg33)

"when I'm playing with the kind of players I'm playing with, "

Brings out the best of everyone to play with world-class players, but we need difference makers. Happy with him as a squad option, not as a first choice right back. As long as he is happy with that role it's all fine.
Glad you feel ok about it

Nice words from Rico but we still need a better player in that position.

Ait was caught out badly yesterday defensively, we can’t have both full back positions weak defensively but good going forward.

I don’t care who goes between Rico and nunes. Need a Walker replacment and neither of them are that.

Who wouldn’t want to stay at city? Stone and Gundo said the same thing recently. Up your game and we won’t need to buy.

He was too far forward because he is not a natural defender. That's just who Rico is. Wolves fans won't be bothered and will write it off as just playing us. We can't afford to do that.

Yes his miss kick from a shite Kovacic pass. In a game of that magnitude hopefully neither of them will play in it this season.

There is no point going into a season where both right backs have similar issues. I'm all for a team game but having 2 right backs that can't defend is pretty pointless. Rico as a squad player is fine but not buying a top quality right back and making do with Rico and Nunes seems an obvious weakness

Watch that Palace goal here if you like. His positioning is fine, he's in line with the other defenders. Problem is the pass down our left and then a good cross being put over without challenge.

Good defensive line but where is Eze?

You can just see his leg in the left of the screen now. He's a mile offside. It's why he had a headstart. It's difficult to defend against because he's still inactive at this point.

Now Eze is behind the ball so on, but Lewis hasn't managed to close the gap enough.

It's a good ball over. Ederson may have been put off going for it by the other Palace striker. Easy for Eze.

It's a tough goal to stop but it's the organization, or balance, or someone on the other flank at fault here.

Respectfully, the idea that he has played well in a handful of games is a decision made by someone who has not watched games with an objective eye. It is simply untrue. I recall many posters calling for him to permanently replace Kyle in the 2023/2024 season because he was in such good form, for example.
And in the same breath, those same posters are probably in the Livramento thread asking for us to pay £80m for a proper right back.

Top and bottom of it, is that if he was anywhere near as good as you think, he wouldn't be getting touted to Forest for £30m, would he?

Fine on this occasion it's not him. Clearly my position in the ground didn't show the whole picture. How about the Mitoma goal?

I don't think anyone here would say Rico is good defensively against a good winger. He's a good player but he should just be a squad player

If he is getting touted at all.
The world of social media can be a strange place.

Fine with that idea, I think some games he brings something extra to us and other games other players are more suited.

We let in a few goals similar to that Palace one though, and you definitely weren't the only one blaming him (I might have done myself on first view, can't remember). I think it has led to him getting blame where it isn't totally deserved though, while sometimes others get a bit of a free ride.

Just watched the Mitoma one...... Positioning was fine, but he was asleep.

I don't know why I come on threads about individual players. All these knobheads on here who think they are better at it than Pep. Pep chooses the players he wants and, thankfully, not the players you want. He's a bit better at it than you.

I think it’s important we learn from our previous mistakes.

Hoarding too many squad players, project players.

I think Nunes is cool. Imperative to the way we play as the RW can be Cherki or Foden because they can drift inside. Rico is alright too he brings something completely different cuz he gives us more control and options in midfield. Helps us when he struggle to move the ball. Yesterday was the few times I’ve seen him contribute in the final 3rd. He’s acc been getting g/a for the part 3 games. If he keeps up that part of his game then there might be a place for him.

All I’m saying is. You can’t have 2 squad players for one position and they share the same weakness. Not to mention Akanji is still here.

I’d still like one to go and to get a Walker replacement preferably someone that has pace, strength and cross a ball well.

God forbid anyone has an opinion on a player, might as well shut the forum down and open up a fucking massage parlour :)

Walker had pace and strength, but he was probably the weakest technical player in the team.
I think this criticism of Rico is still because so many English fans value those qualities above all others.

He handled himself ok against vini in the first leg of Madrid last year when he came on for akanji.

I'm not advocating that he should be our first choice RB nor do I think he is consistently reliable when asked to do a lot of defending.

But our sample size so far consists of him playing in the premier league aged 16-only just 20. He still has man weight to gain and he has tenacity. I think it's entirely possible he adds some bulk and improves defensively and then we would have a very formidable player on our hands.

Agreed at the moment he's a good squad player but I think it's way too early to write him off as developing I to more than that.

I agree maybe in 4 or 5 years time he could develop really well and become first choice. But for the next few years we need someone of top quality that is first choice.
