Gianluigi Donnarumma | Done deal according to Romano

Where did we get this idea that the GK just absolutely has to play to the defender on the first ball under Pep and he'll lose his shit if we don't?

The whole idea was just to retain possession. If we're doing that by playing it to the wingers, there's no issue.

Ederson has multiple assists going straight to the attacker. According to some people, that should be driving Pep insane.

The whole idea was making smart decisions with the ball and playing possession in favour of territory.

It's naive to assume that Donnarumma will be expected by management to be capable of what Ederson is. It's naive to think that they think Trafford has that capability. Ederson is an absolute unicorn in that respect. Donnarumma is perfectly capable of not teeing up a Spurs player from the penalty spot. Which for me is an acceptable trade off for not being able to assist Haaland.

The team has never just been about "playing from the back". It's just been about retaining the ball to dictate tempo. What Trafford did today for the 2nd was just a poor decision and a poor read of the game.

You play out through the back when it's safe to do so, not just because you feel you have to. Just like Ederson played the long ball because an attacker was capable of receiving the pass with minimal work, not because he just wanted to go route one.

We won a treble when Pep trusted his defenders to just CLEAR THE BALL instead of retaining possession! That was the one thing Ake, Dias and Akanji did different in that season from the 17-18 to 21-22 seasons.. where as Zinny/ Laporte/ Cancelo would all try to retain it and it'd end up in our net.

We have to give license to the defenders again to clear it.. because giving up a ball 40 yards from goal is a lot better than losing it 10 yards from your own goal.

That's the only thing I would change after today other than the amount of effort put in because Spurs outworked us today and first to every loose ball!

Donna time may be better right he ball at his feet maybe Trafford is. But I bet Donnarumma has the experience to know he needs to hit it long rather than trying passes that aren’t in.

We have been so successful with a sweeper keeper for years now it was the reason Joe had to be let go. And to find a keeper like Ederson again would be fantastic. Young Trafford is just beginning his journey but won’t be any worse the Bravo who traffic cones would have been better. If we get this guy in has a replacement for Eddie i hope he’s a like for like replacement for our best keeper for years.

What's the point of getting Donnarumma if he's bad with his feet? If Pep asked him to play out from the back then he will make mistakes just like what Trafford did today anyway.

The main issue for me with this signing and any keeper other than Ederson, is that we will have to change the entire way we play. We are set up for the gk to pass out the back, going long seems impossible, unless Haaland wins the ball
i dont think we are setup for the GK to pass it out anymore because Dias is shit on the ball, Ake is shit on the ball and Lewis is as weak as a kitten so can’t be trusted to receive the ball under any pressure.

What Trafford did today is not a mistake. It was a brain dead school boy decision. You would expect him to learn from it and expect that a goalkeeper of Donnarummas experience wouldn’t choose to make that pass.

But also, apart from John Stones I don’t think our defence is built to play out from the keeper so much anymore so whether it’s Ederson or Donnarumma I expect us to change the way we play a bit and Pep has hinted at that today in his post match presser.

I don’t know if pep realises that yet or based on today

This is the remaining transfer priority. Either extend Ederson's contract, or sign Donnarumma. I was very wary of Trafford because of his age, but his performance v Spurs was very poor. We cannot go into the new season with Trafford as our No.1 or even No. 2. He is that bad.

Trafford made a lot of mistakes today, not just that 2nd goal, he also made some horrible decisions when facing those counter-attacks. If we didn't get a sweeper type of GK like Ederson, then what happened today would just happen over and over again in the future, and having Donnarumma wouldn't change that imo.

I didn't check Pep's comment yet but if we're going to change the system then we can play Trafford and see how he performs in that new system. But as long as we keep playing with a high line, we would naturally need a GK who's good at sweeping.

It was this that we couldn't cope with. Spurs played the perfect pressing game. allowed us no room to travel before harrassing us and our passing was neither sharp nor positive. I just wonder how many teams will now come to the Etihad and emulate the game plan Spurs brought today.

It was an absolute nightmarish debut.

What annoyed me more than anything was how when we were 2-0 down, he showed no urgency to get on with the game. Someone in the crowd shouted you're not at Burnley now, get an f'ing move-on. They were right.

Goodbye Trafford. You are not even close to the level required to play for this club. Work on your game, especially fast distribution, and in the meantime City need to either extend Ederson's deal or bring in Donnarumma.
