Spurs (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

It's still killing me that it took Pep that long to get Rodri and Foden on. I understand he can be very stubborn but I've never been frustrated like today. What a shit performance it's still hurting.

Please get Rodrygo and Donnarumma in. I think the players we have now are good, just not good enough for big games when we need to show some character.

Also I've watched some of it back and Dias is so bad. He literally doesn't bring anything to the game, his awareness is dogshit. Stones so much better than him and hardly played in comparison.
It's fucking destroying me that Kusanov sits on the bench and has to watch Dias literally do nothing.
Pep seems to have his in crowd. I think he’d rather lose with his type of players than win ones he doesn’t like. It’s not a good recipe for further success.

It's absolutely not the time to panic.
You’re right

We’ve only played twice. One impressive win. One depressing defeat (in which we could have been 3-0 up before conceding)

Nobody knows which is the real city. Today could have been a bump in the road

We’ll probably know more after half a dozen games

And when it doesn’t make a blind bit of difference?

As last season, we are sluggish, the players don’t seem focused enough for the speed of the opposition who were at us instantly. Poor ball control and carelessness allowed them to take it away from us constantly, and we looked weak being bullied off the ball. Too many through ball opportunities missed and just same ball sideways.
They constantly had 2 players crowd out ours on the ball, something we don’t do.

Other teams will be playing the same way against us and does not bode well.

This is not just tactics or new players gelling as a team, it is individual lack of mental and physical focus, fight and intensity.

Great post and I agree entirely with every single word. We seem preoccupied with trying to look clever, like thinking we don't need a specialist right-back. Well I don't think this sort of improvisation works anymore and it's criminally negligent to think we can have a 55-60 game season without one. Hell, it'd be risky even having just one, but to not have any is verging on ridiculous. I just don’t know what's going on behind the scenes. We seem to have forgotten that we need to earn the right to play. Our Treble season might be the greatest, but for me, we haven't reached the levels of 2017-19 since that time. That team was not only brilliant and exciting but it could physically mix it with other teams as well.
I'm afraid this is part of Pep's arrogance . He appears to think he can take any player and put him in a defensive position for which he was not signed. I'm really struggling to think of one who has excelled in a new defensive position

Their first goal was so soft but a carbon copy of so many before it. So easy to play against.

Pep insisting on a high line with a defence which includes Ake, Lewis, Stones and Dias is absolutely criminal. Ake is the fastest out of them all but he’s lost a yard (or few) in the past couple of years.

One long ball (which Marmoush didn’t bother closing down because he was too busy marking Bentancur who was already marked!?) and a flick on into 70 yards of space behind the defence. Ridiculous and suicidal tactics.

They were with prime Walker and pace in the side, never mind which what we’re using now. How Khusanov doesn’t get the nod - and Nunes - purely for their pace is beyond me.

It just feels like we got a reality check today, that's all, after the win at Wolves .....

And I'm none too sure that things are gonna get any better, at least not in the short term anyway ..... Spurs stifled our game, and we not only ran out of ideas, but fight, something City teams of the past decade had plenty of ..... we persisted with trying to walk the ball into the net, but it was never gonna work today.

Thought Spurs played really well actually, pressed at all the right times and very effectively.

Gave some of our new boys a bit of a reality check, and a few poor performances from more establish players.

Still think we're in for an exciting season, will not be many teams that shut as down as well as that.

Astute point. Ake ran for his life to cut out the cross but he couldn't get there. Kas did Lewis. But the fact is they didn't have it in them.

There was a poster earlier on in this thread urging us to 'not panic' (apologies to the person concerned).

Well, imo, this is exactly the time to panic.

This squad is not good enough or deep enough to make the top 4, never mind compete for the title or Champs League. It is physically weak and slow as fuck. It is mentally weak and complacent.

Maybe Pep will stabilise the situation enough to get us into the top 4, but is that good enough for a club this size and pedigree? I think not. I didn't see anything in the tactics today that looked any different from last season - we played a shit team last week who made us look good, but got exposed completely by a pretty average Spurs team - and that is on Pep! God help us against Arse and Liverpool.

Viana to me seems to be buying for the Portugese League with small technical players as opposed to the brutes like Yaya, Kevin etc. that we used to buy and definitely need.

Also, why are we not acting like a big team. Go get the big players with the big mentalities. But instead, we get fancy dans and fairies who look great in inferior leagues rather than the top players like Wirtz, Barcola etc who would scare the beejesus out of the opposition. The opposition just don't fear us anymore. Go and stick £80m down for Liveramento, or £100m for the PSG winger, etc. What's stopping us apart from not wanting to look crass. Bollocks to that I say.

And as a big club, you say thanks but no thanks to players who are past their best or just not good enough, instead of holding on to them. No other big club would do that cf: PSG with Donna Summers. Also, what other big club has not one proper right back in the squad?

Can you tell I'm pissed off? Some will say I'm spoiled - so what - I support a big club, I've been through the shit and now I want gravy with my chips every time - shoot me.

Rant over.

PS: I hope Pep and the team prove me wrong - I love humble pie.
Humble Pie a very underrated group with the the great Steve Marriott

Agree with this. Spurs got loads of criticism last season for playing that kind of high line under Ange. Any organised team with a bit of pace will cause us trouble.

We need a lower line and I'd get Kush in. We need his pace and aggression.

Too many weak as piss players. Biggest culprit is that fucking 6’5’ inch powder puff ‘Viking’ we have up front. He should be absolutely marmalising people with his physical attributes. I’ve seen more aggression in a fucking lop eared rabbit.
The rabbit can probably head the ball better.

They might not be but we looked so much better with them on the pitch. Which is concerning really.

Foden yes, but Rodri nearly made it 3-0 twice. He will need a long time to adjust, which unfortunately means we need to persist with a further failed midfield.

Imagine how Kusanov feels. His confidence must be in his boots at the minute. There maybe some reason why he isn't getting any game time that is am not aware of. I really feel for the kid.
