Spurs (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

It's still killing me that it took Pep that long to get Rodri and Foden on. I understand he can be very stubborn but I've never been frustrated like today. What a shit performance it's still hurting.
Come on, it's not "stubborn". He is managing two of our most important player's minutes coming back from injury having had extremely challenging seasons last year due to injury.

Please get Rodrygo and Donnarumma in. I think the players we have now are good, just not good enough for big games when we need to show some character.

Also I've watched some of it back and Dias is so bad. He literally doesn't bring anything to the game, his awareness is dogshit. Stones so much better than him and hardly played in comparison.
It's fucking destroying me that Kusanov sits on the bench and has to watch Dias literally do nothing.

Even after spending in January and this summer we have started a season the following issues:

We have only one recognised fullback, Ait-Nouri and he got injured today!

The goal keeping situation is a mess, Trafford has potential, but miles away from the constant standard we'll need to win anything and needs to learn from a no.1 for a couple of years. Ederson & Ortega both seem to want to leave.

We have two wingers, Doku & Savinho who aren't improving to the standard anywhere near players we've had in the past, so we are playing players like Bobb, Foden, Silva and Marmoush out of position. Today was a great example we ended up playing so narrow with no width it suited Spurs defence perfectly.

Defensively our best player the last two games has been 31 year old John Stones, but you worry he's one tackle away from an injury. We seem happy to let Akanji and Ake go, but Khusanov isn't getting a look in.

We look and play like a stagnated club.

Who is at fault?

Recruitment is alway top of the list when it comes to success and failure.

Coach longevity must be playing its part.

Winning and now not motivated in the same way.

Tactics not working anymore.

City went into free fall last season and we all made tons of excuses.

What’s the excuse now?

I can remember when teams that wore blue looked gutted that they lost games and didn't joke about as we are getting beat 2-0.

Maybe the sport really is changing.
I'm bloody hurting now, as I do after every defeat. Yeah, some people can handle it well and are all to quick to tell you they can, but I'm not one of them. Drove 8 hours to Key West the day after seeing us lose to Al-Hilal and couldn't think about anything else. If we have players laughing and joking whilst we're losing then there's a cultural problem in the club that needs rooting out. It's as if the fire disappeared the day we beat West Ham to win the league last year.

Just got in. For me there were no positives from today apart from the new turnstiles worked OK for me & they had Guinness zero in the ground. We were shite. It was like deja vu of a performance from last season when we were going through our bad patch. The most worrying thing for me was the team had no ideas of what to do to get back into the game. Bernardo & Doku came on and made us look worse IMO. The new signings were all really poor except Ait Nouri, who went off injured before we could rate his performance.

We got a bit giddy after last week, but in reality it looks like we just beat a poor Wolves side, who made us look better than we are. Today has brought us back to earth with a bump.

Their first goal was so soft but a carbon copy of so many before it. So easy to play against.

Pep insisting on a high line with a defence which includes Ake, Lewis, Stones and Dias is absolutely criminal. Ake is the fastest out of them all but he’s lost a yard (or few) in the past couple of years.

One long ball (which Marmoush didn’t bother closing down because he was too busy marking Bentancur who was already marked!?) and a flick on into 70 yards of space behind the defence. Ridiculous and suicidal tactics.

They were with prime Walker and pace in the side, never mind which what we’re using now. How Khusanov doesn’t get the nod - and Nunes - purely for their pace is beyond me.
Our entire backline is slow and asking for trouble how can the coaches not see this, ffs look around at other teams LB/RB’s with pace,Khusanov and Nunes should have started,as for Dias he actually seems to be getting worse ..

This went to Doku, not Haaland.

Hopefully not a continuation of last season’s trend!

I don't mind Doku so this isn't a criticism of him.

But when he plays we tend to play exclusively through him.

The benefit of Doku is that he is double or triple teams regularly. So that must leave other players open. But we are very predictable playing through the left over and over again we don't get that benefit.

We need to mix it up more.

Foden yes, but Rodri nearly made it 3-0 twice. He will need a long time to adjust, which unfortunately means we need to persist with a further failed midfield.
We conceded a corner at the end and Rodders was blowing like he’d just completed a 100 mile run across Death Valley in a 19th century diving suit. Gonna be a good month or more before he gets back to full speed

One other thing City.

Please cut out the razzmatazz /fireworks pre kick off. We’ve come to watch a football match ffs

Least of our problems I know but that along with the 100 people on the pitch/touchline before the whistle goes is embarrassing

Whenever they do shit like that or a lightshow at a night game, it always seems to go pear shaped on the pitch also.

After the relative stroll at Wolves, a couple of them must have thought this Premier League lark is a slice of piss.

Huge dose of reality must have been applied today. Although, I don't think Pep covered himself in glory today, and neither did anyone who stepped foot on that pitch.

I was excited at the starting eleven, but had reservations that Bobb, Marmoush and Cherki would all work well behind Erling. There was a game or two last year, where he tried similar with Haaland, Sav, Doku and Marmoush and it simply didn't work. I think we can realistically only go with three and another in central midfield.

When RAN (hopefully he's ok) went off we were straight back to the issues of no recognised fullbacks.

Overall; with a disjointed pre-season, it probably wasn't unexpected this, and it may last a few more games yet.

Hopefully we see a steady improvement from here on, and for fuck sake, can we please keep players fit and not be wrecked by injuries again.

Agree with this. Spurs got loads of criticism last season for playing that kind of high line under Ange. Any organised team with a bit of pace will cause us trouble.

We need a lower line and I'd get Kush in. We need his pace and aggression.

The curse of the injury to the left back set us back sadly, Ake got found out pretty quickly with Spurs attacking down the left, City and Pep MUST sort out the full-backs roles before the window closes, Lewis is not a right back or good enough for a top team going forward.

lets hope Aït-Nouri injury is just a knock and not 6 to 8 weeks or longer,
I think Pep can sell 3 or 4 players or just get them loans, Akanji and Ake are done in a city shirt, Also Gundogan plus
Ederson and Stefan could be leaving if Donnarumma signs

I would hope City Sign a top draw right back and maybe another full back that can play both sides

I agree, I've seen countless times players warming up on the touchline (whilst City are losing), laughing with each other - Foden today for example - and going through the motions with some exercises. Camera pans to bench and often see squad players joking around having 'bantz'. Gets my goat to see that, I'd be pissed off at losing and it gives off the wrong signals to everyone, opposition included. You often hear 'he likes to play with a smile on his face', fine if you're winning but when the chips are down it's not ok.

Watched only the highlights but… last season problems are this seasons problems. I would rather we concede possession now and be defensively stronger and play more counter attacking ourselves we can’t out play opposition anymore, what stood out also was we didn’t take any chances, we fucked up they scored they fucked up we missed a glaring opportunity simple as that, we will not win a lot of games this season against average teams due to our system of being so exposed again this extends to teams like the rags spurs villa Newcastle, we are top 4 again at best even wolves had chances last week if they could stay on side!

Absolutely shite today and huge problems

Pep will sink or swim this year. I don’t think he makes it to next year if he we aren’t knocking on the door of another title.
