Savinho | City reject Spurs approach

It's not that complex, it just doesn't work when you have teams who are happy to sit, wait and hit us on the transition at pace.

Our enormous success in the treble season came from Stones stepping into midfield. Why he's now moved away from that now when he's back fit is beyond me?
Mate, Pep publicly stated Walker didn't have the nous to play the inverted FB role. He's also said Nunes doesn't either.

When first asked to play this role, Stones said in an interview that he had to ask Rico how to do it.

When Pep first brought about this tactical change, it flummoxed our opposition. So much so, that after a couple of seasons, they all started to copy it. But in doing so, they also worked out how to get around it.

In your own words...

"it just doesn't work when you have teams who are happy to sit, wait and hit us on the transition at pace"

Mate, what dya think every team is doing to us game after game since last November? "It just doesn't work"...

We've been sussed out & it's beyond time that we get back to a basic 4-3-3 & rebuild our game & confidence from there.

Do we think savinho would have made a difference against Spurs of he was available to play?

Can see Savinho leaving but I will be stunned if we sign Rodrygo. The club just don’t operate like that.

The goal has collective fault.

Re Rico, he needs to:

1. be aware of what’s happening in the space to his right/behind him.

2. He needs to be quicker to get back to deal with the cross (prime Walker for example would’ve dealt with it no problem).

3. He needs to be “sprint fit” to maintain the required recovery sprint over distance.

Had he had 2 and 3 in his locker he’d have intercepted the cross without issue and wouldn’t need to go “full bloodied” at it.

So, yes, there are lots of faults in Rico’s part in that goal.

However, for me, if some of your defenders don’t have 2 and 3, you don’t play such a high line.
He just needed 1. TBH, 2 & 3 would have taken care of themselves if he'd had his head on a swivel. There were of course others previous to his involvement that should have stopped it being an issue in the first place.

You’ve quoted the unedited version of my post there mate.

I added a line at the end to counter the kind of response you’ve made, shortly after the original post.

I agree, the tactic only works if you have a rapid back 4. We don’t.

But, in the context of us playing the current high line tactic, Rico makes a number of mistakes.
The speed of the back four isn't our issue, because in attack & transition, we don't have a back four whether rapid or slug-paced anyway. This is exactly my point mate! We end up with a back 2 or 3, with huge gaping holes in the defensive channels where FB's generally operate.

The opposition attack the areas we vacate trying to play with inverted FB's & a high line. If we had a traditional back four yesterday, with a No 6 in front & a retreating No 8 to help, Spuds' opener was far less likely to have happened.

Since last November, Chelsea & Newcastle are the only top 6 sides we managed to beat. Of those considered big clubs, you can add Spuds to that list.

What I saw against Wolves & Spuds was a rinse & repeat of last season, & considering the huge changes to our squad & backroom team, the one glaring thing that's remained the same is our failed inverted FB system.

Our issue is staring us in the face. We need to stop blaming a steady succession of players & begin to look at the common denominator in all of this... It's the system our squad are being asked to play.

The amount of similar breakaway, counter-attacking goals we concede is no coincidence. The very definition of madness is to keep doing the same failing thing over & over, & expecting a different result.

Rodrygo is not an upgrade on savinho. I don’t mind being quoted the moment we get rodrygo. We have Marmoush already for 80M for the left side now we want rodrygo too who doesn’t wanna play RW. That makes no sense.
As long we play this inverted FB bullshit our wingers will never be free - let alone our defense. Especially when our clubs number 1 right back is Rico lewis who wouldn’t start for any other PL club.

Pep wants to play a certain way, and a high defensive line is part of it. It's the sporting directors job to sign players who are compatible with this. Last season we were in transition. Players were bought but they weren't ready. We still aren't ready. I would bring Khusanov into the back 4 alongside Stones.

We are unfortunate that Kovacic and Rodri are still out. Yesterday, Spurs dominated our midfield. Arguably Cherki should not have started.
Sorry, I totally disagree mate. Name me a right back who'd have made a difference to Spuds in transition yesterday?

We've tried so many players at RB & RCB to cover the inverted RB since last November, & the result ends up being the same. We keep getting overloaded in the channels in transition, rinse & repeat.

At what point do we stop blaming our elite players & take a closer look at the failing system they're being asked to play?
