The Squad planning thread

I think sometimes, stuff just creeps up on people. Not wilful, malicious or ‘not doing their job’ and I think that’s what’s happened with the squad.

When the press do their fatuous combined XI’s I always had 8/9 City players in, whoever we were playing.

If I do the same now, with Liverpool and Arsenal and everyone is fit, I’m only thinking Rodri, Stones and Haaland have a chance of getting in, which sort of sums up what’s crept up on us.
More worryingly, it’s not only Liverpool and Arsenal either…
Complacency. We hadn’t been in the position of winning almost everything, and we then found that some players, coaching staff, and management lost their appetite, their edge. We need to be ruthless and unsentimental if we want to get there again and then stay there. The early shoots are encouraging but might not show fruit this season.

Think the fact madrid went for Arnold and liverpool replaced him with Frimpong, nieither of which are better defenders than Nunes tells us a lot about the right back market.
It can happen. There was a time when high-quality left-backs were also in short supply, particularly when both Mendy and Ghoulam were injured. We either end up frittering more money away now looking for a sub-standard alternative, which is pointless, or accept the situation and continue the search.

True but there was still glaring issues that havent changed even from last season. Spurs were fairly comfortable but Arsenal and Liverpool would have twatted us at the weekend
spurs beating us doesn't mean arsenal or liverpool would, completely different teams and set up. That said we have a completely new team young team avarage age 24 with new coaches that have hardly trained and played together. Expecting to see how this team will play and look in 3 momths time is daft.Neither Vianna nor Khaldoon will be changing any plans based on Saturday, nor should they be.

Daft as it sounds, the ‘4-peat’ was likely to blame. I don’t think anyone thought they could go to the well again, including Pep. However, out of loyalty, they were given another season and, lo and behold, they did win it again.
It then becomes clearer why they were given another go last season and that’s why it’ll be a couple of seasons before we’re back challenging.

The difference of thinking between DOF and fans is clear and obvious .

Once this window shuts Vianna should be spending 100% of his time finding a replacement for Pep.

We can't not ready for our next big change.

It can't be put off forever.

So 0% of his time should be spent on looking at ways of improving the squad despite the manager having 2 years left on his deal?

It wasn't a sarcasm, when we lost 5-2 against Leicester people weren't satisfied with the transfers as we had only signed: Ruben, Ake and Ferran Torres.

Pep started season with that stupid kid Eric Garcia and Mendy of course was in the mix, how he couldn't be..

But then we improved and hopefully we will have similar scenario this season as well..

It's 2 years away, the candidates for replacing Pep are different today than they were 2 years ago, and will be different in 2 years. There will be a few they are watching but managers will be added and fall off the list all the time.
There is a possible alternative in that Pep signed 2 years knowing he'd only do 1 to prevent running another contract down, but in that case Khaldoon and Soriano would have known when he signed it and would already be aware of who they want to come in next summer.

True. The difference next time is that we know that such success comes at a subsequent cost. The trick for us is finding a way to remain consistently competitive across domestic, European, and now international fronts.
