1 | James Trafford - 2025/26

Anyone wanting this kid over an elite keeper needs to give their head a wobble.

He seems the billy big bollocks kind of guy. Only time will tell if he's another Pickford. I hope he bounces back from his mistake but there's just to bigger drop off from an elite keeper for this to work long term...
He isn't a BBB in any way. To reach this level you have to back yourself. He did, and has been rewarded. We signed him back because of his performances, not just out of the ether. He has just won Players' POTY and the record least goals conceded.

Ignoring the error that led to Spurs's 2nd goal, what did you think of Trafford's distribution?

I thought his short distribution was painfully slow, and his long distribution was inaccurate. I thought his late saves were evidence that he is a good shot stopper. Was his distribution affected by the goal i.e., was he taking a long time to make short passes out of an over-abundance of caution?

If his distribution was as poor as I think, then that would help to explain our poor performance against Spurs.

In the Championship. His performance against Spurs reminded me strongly of his performances for Burnley when they were last in the Premier League.

So much for supporting our players. It was one game and one pass, in his first start for us.

Why write off one of our players already? I presume when Ederson made a bunch of mistakes in his first season you said the same?

He’s a young keeper with loads of potential and clearly the club can see that. Shame you can’t already.
I’d seen enough of Trafford before he joined us. I don’t see what you see, it’s not me piling in. If he were to become Liverpool number 1 how would most their fans feel? I’d be delighted- he’s not anywhere near being a top class keeper. He weakens us, ergo, strengthens our rivals. We can and should do better.
As for Ederson - he was mustard from day one.

And did his performance against Wolves remind you of that too?
We know what we bought, I think, and a couple of errors in one game does not change that.
It doesn't mean that Ederson won't be No.1, or Donnarumma won't be a target, but I do expect Trafford to become a top keeper.

Too early to judge him yet. On Saturday his passing out from the back was very poor, the second goal, the sliced clearance into touch, twice he just booted it long and it went through to Vicario. It's only his second game so he needs to be given more time. Perhaps he could've done more with the first goal too from Johnson.
Hopefully he comes through it and his confidence remains strong.

I mean, Ederson has literally made the exact same mistake against Spurs at home himself.

I'd like another keeper if Ederson goes, I just don't see it happening this late in the window despite the rumours

To me he completely unsettled the defence. His choice of pass and often weight of pass was terrible. There was a point in the second half where Reijnders was completely open and it took Trafford about ten seconds to play the pass.

I thought he was lucky not to be sent off. I don't want to pile in because he's a young kid but at the same point he cost £30m and if he's not been signed to start in the here and now, then why have we signed him?

Maybe for the same reason we signed Reis and Echeverri? Or even Khusanov ?

Fuck it, it's only money ;-)

Be real, the fact our starting GK is this lad, and our starting RB is Rico Lewis means we ain’t winning shit this season. He doesn’t really have a great personality either. He comes across kinda timid in interviews, goalkeepers that I like are extremely confident, a goalkeeper should be a leader. In interviews or on the pitch. Once again i believe he will be great, but i don’t want to see him improve at ours, we will buy him if he becomes world class, we are City, Ederson was like 6 months older than him when we brought him in, and he looked world class straight away

So you want your goalkeeper to have his hands on his hips on interviews and behave like a massive cock?

:)

Kinda. Neuer, Kahn, Schmeichel, Courtois, I like my goalkeepers a little insane or at the very least sure of themselves. I will say this, he’s at a new club and the step up is not right so he probably feels a little intimidated. Relegated player should never join the perennial champions of the country

Because he is a top prospect.
Nobody will deny he had a bad game - of course he did.
But, last year he won Players' POTY and broke the record for least goals conceded. We also know him, his character, and his talent.
Patience will be needed with all of these young players.

"Goalkeeper makes mistake"... It's not exactly headline news is it. Shit happens to every goalkeeper and the vast majority of them get over it.

I bet Joe Corrigan is glad the Internet didn't exist when he starred at City.

James Trafford will be fine for City.

The entire post match discussion on this thread should have just been that video of Ederson doing exactly the same thing with Rodri 2 years ago.

Made q mistake. Won't be his last. Eddie madd many and so has every keeper before him under Pep.

We keep it moving. He needs to keep working on his craft. Especially as a Sweeper-keeper and build up passing keeper.

Im not too worried about the mistakes tbh.

Literally every new Pep signing has these and I've seen Ederson make mistakes like this EVERY season.

Im sure he will learn to play it long more often.

Except that it wasn't solely one mistake. His distribution was awful full stop so that we weren't building up play from the back.

Most of the time spurs were pressing us, therefore he had to go long. The only player who wins any headers is Haaland, so it was a waste of time most of the time.

Obviously he made a mistake, but I didn’t think his distribution was that bad. I don’t think the system helped and the midfield, who you could pass to were non existent

Against wolves his distribution was fantastic, so I don’t think we should be judging him on one game or have this constant comparison to Ederson - no keeper in world football is as good

City's defence was not under pressure against Wolves. We were under pressure against Spurs. With Ederson and Ortega we have generally been able to play through the press; against Spurs, we had more difficulty in doing so. Trafford does not appear as adept as Ortega and Ederson ar playing a short / long passing game against a defence under pressure. Perhaps the goal he conceded unsettled him
