Pep loves skill, absolutely loves it, but you must do it within the context of the team.
I supported Jack throughout his time with us and felt he was treated unfairly by some fans.
I do not know what went on behind the scenes, if anything did.
It is also about how the player feels about himself. At Everton, Jack will feel like he is the best, the most gifted player on the team. He will be a hero because of what he can do. At City, for a while, he marvelled at what others could do. He found his place, earned a load of trophies, but was never the big man. Some need it, to feel that purpose and that value. I feel that is the story with him. I will never know for sure, but a feeling I have.
Messi is a bit of an outlier. He is arguably the best of all time, so he earns some sway, and his work-rate was relentless during Pep's time. Ronaldinho is more of an argument. Possibly the most naturally gifted I have ever seen, but an individual, a maverick, and gone from Pep's plans.
The British press is ALL about the individual. They talk of games being manager Vs manager, or player Vs player, and far less about the functioning whole. They carry a lot of the responsibility for how low the English game sank on the international stage, IMO.
