Hugo Viana | Director of Football

I am gobsmacked but perhaps not surprised. We have a brand new team and a new coaching set up. Yet posters are drawing huge conclusions about the players, the system and the chief coach after one defeat. Bonkers, panic, nonsense. Wait till Christmas to make your judgements or save them for the madness of the Matchday thread. Ffs, City.
I think it's reasonable for fans to react to wins and defeats but also be able to see the big picture. You point that out.

I think the CWC distorted City's transfers. We did the groundwork on 3 June signings and then seemed to go into deep freeze, however, if Donnarumma signs, in addition to Reijnders, then I think that would be a good step forward. We haven't take it yet though. BBC Football are only talking about Isak and Martinez.

I still find it really strange we haven't had a right back for 2 seasons
1 position in 11. City reportedly tried for Livramento but it wasn't the window to extract him from Newcastle given all else that was going on.

If Donnarumma signs in addition to the pre-World Club Cup signings, that would be a very significant change. All I want is for City to throw everything at it. Last week I wasn't convinced we were doing that, and felt-short changed but there were irons in the fire. Let's hope we pull it out on deadline day.

BBC football only talking about possible transfers to Liverpool and the Rags? I’m shocked, stunned and amazed!

sadly rivals for title all had much better windows. thats a fact. DoF of Liverpool and new DoF at Arsenal I think their fans very happy with them.

hope this is a lesson we learn from. win the league and you have a choice to strengthen while you are ahead or sit back let others to catch up. Liverpool did option 1 we did option 2. lets see which works out better.

for Viana the buddy buddy approach is just not there that Txiki had with the hierarchy. if results go bad this year and I am worried as once CL games start we will be in for a shock, Viana will be under pressure more than Pep.
as likes of Monaco, Dortmund, Napoli, Villarreal, despite weaker squads will figure out how to play vs us and the big games like Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Real well those coming us well until Christmas.

its not all on Viana, Txiki's part in this is something like 80%. the squad building from the moment of treble win is fucking weak. almost like gross misconduct.

Why ? No offence but we played without a left back for years.
Pep has very strange views on how a team sets up. When it works it's brilliant, when it doesn't.......

It’s gone a little pear shaped.

As others have constantly posted, I can’t believe City haven’t bought a proper right back, which has been one of the glaring requirements from last season and this season. What are the people in charge of recruitment and transfers at City thinking?

We've said goodbye to the so called "uncs" (very disrespectful to certain players) and are now saying a big hello to the "incs"...the inconsistents...Doku/Marmoush/Bobb/Savinho/Reijnders...the guys who can't seem to have two good games in a row
Going to be quite a bit more of this until we start signing players who have done it at a higher level.
Feckin' Liverpool, win the league last season and haven't sat back, nope, kicking on big time by bringing in high level players all over the pitch whereas we carry on trying to be the net spend kings again.
Still, plenty to be positive about including the fact should be easier to get tickets for games in the next few seasons.

You end up getting beat by Spurs and Brighton.

I thought I’d finish your sentence off for you.

Hugo shops in the middle of Lidl for his transfer targets. Signs random players no one wants for inflated prices.

You genuinely think we can compete with nunes at right back?

Not easy to replace world class players (at their peak) like KDB, Ederson, Walker. Plus losing Rodri, Stones, for so long. All clubs have transition periods

It's not easy when you make no effort to replace them and allow them to age or decline due to injuries without bringing replacements through. We've always been very good in ensuring we continue to improve the scheme. That changed up to and after the treble. Subsequently we've seen what appears to be a desperate attempt to change things but rather than buy the players for Pep to continue our general style of play, we've brought in players that don't look capable of doing it. The possession-dominance we had from so many solid technical players has been lost and we now have a group who look like they can barely pass the ball to one another, run it into trouble time and time again and leave us completely exposed.

We will need time to gel, time we haven't had. And I'm certain we've got a very good squad of players. But the glaring issues we should have resolved simply haven't been.

Yup. Patience is needed. I would add, however, that money should not be a problem. We can borrow from our owners and only the interest will count as spending (New rules permitting). Even so, we seem to be baulking at some fees demanded, yet Donnarumma’s high wage appears not to be a problem. Is there some confusion in the strategy? All that said, it is a two year rebuild, so let’s be calm.
