Hugo Viana | Director of Football

Does this mean the Premier League have beaten us by Technical knockout. If they have hamstrung our spending. They have knocked us back a couple of seasons for sure. Is it coincidence that the red clubs are spending now, or is it all pre planned to give them a head start? After the verdict.

Our net spend is not that far off Liverpool in the last 12 months.

They have just bought better and managed their squad better.

We bought rubbish and gave contract extensions and pay rises to players on a decline.

Are we? Chelsea are buying players to improve and fill their squad as well as flipping the younger players for profit. As it stands they’ve got at least two players per position. We’re struggling to get a RB and a good midfielder

I would say it's more like we're trying to do what Chelsea are doing, only by accident.

Agree, we have proved that we can do it tho...

My concern is something that another poster wrote - are the club happy to just finish top four now for a period of time

What will tell me is next summers window, when we are cleared of these BS 115 charges - i am hoping the club go big. Just maybe that includes a new manager at the helm i dont know

That depends if Pep wants to and is committed 100%

From a business perspective, there's nothing wrong with finishing top 4 every year.

If we keep buying physically weak Players who neither tackle, score or assist then something has to give. What bothers me is when players and the team are successful pep is lauded as a genius for putting together a great side, When the players flop its somebody else's fault. There's bound to be discussions between the director of football and the Manager. How could there not be? Between the whole lot of them you would think they could come up with a right back.

We haven't flopped for a long time, bar a season decimated by injury.
Never is a season decided three games in...NEVER.

I may be alone, but I couldn't give a hoot what Liverpool do.

The team as a whole mighn't have flopped but individually there's been plenty of players who haven't cut it here.
here's a few Doku,saviniho,philips ,Grealish etc, .

He is doing a fantastic job. We are currently paying the price for our complacency over the last few years. Look what dippers have done after their title win....

Give him time and he will sort us out.

If Viana was building for a new manager it'd make sense. Or if Pep was staying for 4+ more seasons then it'd make sense.

But if Pep is like a caretaker because our next manager isn't ready yet then all these signings seem to run an unnecessary gauntlet.

We won 4 in a row.

They've won 1.

So now you are changing your own narrative?
Show me any business that hasn't made a single mistake in 12 years.
I don't judge young players as finished articles. When our team turns the corner, I will be very surprised if Doku and Savinho don't prove you wrong. However, I imagine that you will move your condemnation on to someone else.

What were you thinking just 2 years and three months ago when Liverpool finished 5th?

I agree.
There may be some tension in the string. We do not know.
Certainly, it is hard to try to meet all of our objectives - replace world class, attack more quickly, buy young prospects with high potential, keep a small squad.
All that takes some doing.

We are in the midst of change, and some of it because we did make the mistake of holding on to legends a little to long, which we have admitted. That's okay...we move on.

I never mentioned liverpool. I'll be amazed if either of those players are still here. For whatever reason we have been
buying players who aren't up to the job and ignoring some big holes in the squad.

I disagree in players who aren't up to it - it is just too early to judge.
Big holes? I can only assume that you mean RB because you are not happy with Rico or Nunes. That's not a hole, it is just filled by something you don't value.

I spoke about Liverpool because they demonstrate that replacing an aging squad is not straightforward. Young players of the potential to replace those can take a while to bed-in. Two years later, they were champions, from fifth place. Too many here want instant results and make premature condemnation of young players.

For the record I have never condemned Rico lewis ,it's not his fault he's asked to play at right back. I have voiced my opinion on Saviniho and Doku , Neither who I believe are at the level we need. (Savinihos playacting particularly grates). I'd expect goals and assists from wide men in a top side. Never understood the signing of Philips or Nunes either. Cherki, Khusanov, and Reijnders( when he adjusts to the speed of the premier league) I like. Disappointed with Gonzalez, Marmoush and At Nouri ( no kind of a defender). We have fallen back considerably in the last 12 months, not much wiggle room left.

I am not understanding where the holes are then.
This is more like you are not happy with certain players.
When results are like ours, frustration is inevitable.
