United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

The backless "rule" was introduced to stop the time wasting of passing back and forth its done its job refs rarely will give a FK unless they see it being used deliberately
You will get nothing from Altincham supporting Taylor.

Apologies for the late posting. Tut tut it should have been directly after the game for maximum good luck. (Look I'm superstitious I can't help it. So sue me!!) ;-)

The Boys in Blue didn't give in, they fought to the end. Thank you City, thank you lads and a special thank you to the fans, you were superb.
You showed 'em, you showed 'em all.

Especially all those silly zounderkites in the media and the officials. Plus those Stretford fans. Ha, ha, ha. Poor Mr Ferguson's face and that other scruffy personage who could do with a good shave and a wash and brush up. How dare he appear in our stands in that state.

I wasn't at the match but my friend who had my ticket said it was an electric atmosphere and she had a great day. Fantastique. :-)

Some of the comments on here are genuinely hilarious, for the last 2 weeks from some people all i have seen is pep has been found out, his way of playing isnt working anymore, we need to evolve etc etc, so yesterday we play a different way and win and now people are complaining that we didnt have enough possession, we let them attack us etc etc, basically you want everything different but to also be the same.
People forget the treble team could be pragmatic when it was required.

We may have had much more possession in the first half but only created three chances resulting in a good shooting opportunity: Haaland in the first minute, Foden's goal and a chance hit straight at the keeper a few minutes later.
In the second half with less possession we scored twice, had that crazy miss by Haaland, a flick straight at the keeper from Haaland and the miss by Reindeer. - Basically we made better use of the possession we had.
The positives were the goals and chances created, and the solid defending. The main negative for me was giving away the ball unnecessarily in our own half by passing to players who were marked, the same mistake we saw several times against Spurs.
Overall we were at least three goals better than them.
Another positive: They are crap.
Another negative: I've retired so can't go into work and wind up rags this morning.
Passing to players who are being marked is a key part of our style - roll the defender and pull the opposition out of shape - high risk and reward.

31 pages. All the rags must be in hiding still.

Good performance yesterday, but not great. They are seriously seriously shite. Thought we gave the ball away a bit too easily and Tijani and Rodri were rushed at times. We will have to sharpen up against Arsenal or it will be a long afternoon.

Donna, Phil, Erling and Jeremy were all superb. Great to see Khusanov growing in stature too.

Unless a team plays a 4 4 2, he'll always moan because that's all he knew as a player and when he won his medals it was all 4 4 2
It's like this when it comes to zonal marking from corners. He only knew man to man, he doesn't get it, so he moans and groans "i really don't like this zonal marking!"
He should be telling us the benefits of a system and if it fails, why it's failed, not just be totally against a system or tactic
This is exactly why he was such a disaster in management. He failed to adapt to the modern game and doesn't understand systems other than 4 4 2
Spot-on. All those United players flopped as managers because they only knew one system.

Is it only me or did our pattern of play look different yesterday.
I noticed our back line was not as high when in possession in their half and we didn’t compress the game into the final third as has been our style in the Pep era.
This opened up more spaces between the lines when going forward.
I also saw either Dias or Gvardiol sitting much deeper when we were going forwards…maybe we’re learning how to prevent other teams catching us on the break at long last…or maybe it was just because we were playing against a poor team.
Either way we didn’t get caught out as we have been so often before.
Those two points you mentioned were things that have been suggested on here more than once*.

Pep must be a new BlueMooner :-)

I don't think we actually turned any corners yesterday - I'm happy to treat it as a standout day in isolation - but it would be good to think that there's been a conscious mindset change as far as the pressing is concerned. The next week should tell us more.

(* that's tongue-in-cheek, btw, before any of the over-precious types accuse us of claiming any credit...)

I noticed more actual clearances from the back and the goalie which caused less OHHH FFS moments with the defence.

We played like this for large periods of the Wolves game. They had 50 per cent possession. United had more possession. We will be amazing in the second half of this season when Rodri gets back to his best.

I remember the first win from the 21 consecutive wins in 20/21. The previous two results were two draws: United away and WBA home. Then we played at Southampton. It was a very, very difficult game. We won 1:0, the performance wasn't the best.

Not saying we are going to win 15 games in a row or something. We are likely to lose or draw at Arsenal. But the first games in which the improvement begins are likely to be like this: not the greatest performance wise.

This team needs several wins in a row and things will look a lot better. IF we win at Arsenal, then, imo, we are likely to win the league. Big if, though.

Don't know if it has been said already, but after the abuse he got last season in the derby it was so good to see Foden shove it up them and have a superb game.
Whatever the reason, Foden obviously had serious problems last season.
Touch wood, that is all behind him now and as he is moving into his prime years hopefully we are about to see the best of him.
His overall derby record is fantastic

I very rarely speak to reds but spoke to one before briefly and he only wanted to talk about the weather. I couldn't stop smirking.

There were some very good individual performances by City players e.g., Foden, Doku, Khusanov and Haaland but there were also some tired players out there like Gvardiol and Reijnders struggled with the intensity. It was unusual to see City defending and counterattacking Utd.

We were never going to go from ‘zero to hero’ in one match but some very encouraging signs…..tempered by the quality of the opposition.

Hopefully Pep now realises that that we need physicality in at least three of the four defenders and he has seemed to ditch the inverted full back which without the correct players, has cost us so many times over the last twelve months.

The presence of Rodri, although clearly very rusty helped and the return to form of Foden , Dias and Haaland is obviously going to improve any team.

Doku has now set the marker in what was his best game for City and O’Reilly got better as the game went on…..his height helped when United kept trying the diagonal ball which has caught us out so many times.

Donnarumma gave the back four so much more confidence but we need to see a lot more from Reinjders who was mostly on the periphery, although he could have ended up with two goals.

Special mention for Bernardo who should not play in every game and gave the ball away on a couple occasions which would never have happened 2 years ago. He covered some ground yesterday and never stopped running and put in a couple of vital tackles.
He is up there with David Silva, Aguero, Kompany etc etc when it comes legends…..just wish John Stones could be available for every game like Bernardo has been.
