25 | Gianluigi Donnarumma - 2025/26

We have a proper keeper at last.

loved Eddy, but he wasnt a top class keeper, the Don is.
Let's not do this with Ederson. Donnarumma is obviously a better player, but I feel like recency bias is kicking in where Ederson was left for dead by an awful defence throughout most of last season (and yes he played poorly at times himself). He was absolutely a top keeper.

Think of what Real Madrid have won over the last few years, wonder how much of that is actually down to Courtois because they are bloody bang average in the realm of all time great teams really aren't they? Donnarumma could have that sort of impact on us with the saves he is capable of making.

He was a joy to watch.

I can well imagine that in years to come we'll be saying to our kids and grandkids just how great he was - similar to what my dad used to tell me about Frank Swift and Bert Trautmann.

An excellent debut for Donnarumma.

I've received a bunch of pushback for my take on Donnarumma - which is that on his day he's world best in the goal - but isn't great on the ball and has other weaknesses.

I've not cited any particular post thus far in support of what I think...

But here's two - as a for example from my favorite analyst, LNobbins. For me... LNobbins knows his stuff and is very thorough without bias either pro City or against.

You may disagree with LNobbins - and I disagree, slightly, with some of his conclusions - but LNobbins is very through - and is well worth the watch...

I listed to a fair amount of that. Nothing that people aren't well aware of. But there are critical things to consider when listening to tactical analysis like this.

Firstly, is he qualified to drone on about tactics? Probably not. Secondly, does he consider all factors? Definitely not. On that point, he references Ortega giving the ball away at Anfield. What about looking at other top goalkeepers across Europe? How do they measure?

Ultimately the weakness he has led to him being dropped for certain opposition and then he came in against Inter and they won the CL. I'll take that.

And the final, most critical point is that Pep is well aware of what his strengths and weaknesses are and we will either work on improving them or adapt to reduce their impact on the team. There's also quite a big difference in our front line for those "hopeful" balls up the pitch to clear danger. PSG didn't have the viking up top to hold the ball up the way we do.

Also, Ederson was outstanding in the CL in the Treble season, conceding just 4 goals from 32 shots on target: 87,5% saves. Not many keepers have done better in CL history, if any at all.

Donnarumma isn't any better than Ederson but is still a worthy replacement rather than fully rely on both Ortega and Trafford for this coming season. The issue is we have to make ourselves more defensively astute.

Superb debut. That wondersave is exactly the reason you pay the money for him. It's kinda refreshing to watch us have an incredible shot stopper between the sticks.
Not according to some stubborn posters who put their agendas above what's best for the club.

Not dismissing Eddy at all, loved him at our club, but never thought he was really top class as shot stopper, everything else he did was brilliant. The Don though i do believe is another level, he is Allison Becker level.

Ignorant of the fact that the YouTuber may be a feking no nowt...

Even if they have a decent knowledge of the game, content creators are just that. People who create YouTube videos. It's not like it's some seasoned vet of the game. If it was a goalkeeping coach with genuine credentials I'd be a little more open to it.

Looked very nervous playing out from the back and the defenders looked unsure when receiving the ball under pressure, his long kicking was atrocious but for shot stopper & commanding his area he was brilliant, needs time to find his feet.
You must have gone to a different game mate. I thought he looked comfortable on the ball and his kicking was ok. He’ll never be as good as Eddie with his feet but is a different level as an actual keeper.
