The Labour Government

Invest in our public sector and get it back on track after more than a decade of austerity.
It's like a fruit loop convention on here. Comedy gold.

What do you propose we pay for this renaissance with? Beans?

The unfortunate truth is we are broke, and sadly even more broke than we were before Labour took over. Reeves taxed is some more and spent some more. And did it fix things? No, it made us even more broke. And you want to do it more and more. Genius.

We’re really not broke and, in fact, cannot go broke.

My working life is split roughly 24 years HM forces/civil service, 17 years private. My private pension that was frozen 20 years ago before I transferred out to my own pot, outstrips my civil service pension by about 4/1. If I had to rely on my civil service pension ide be working until I am 80. This gold plated civil service pension shit from the person you responded to is just that, bullshit. Maybe a few have done very well but the vast majority don’t.

Or was it more a case of your pay was shit until you’d got a lot of experience under your belt and entered the private sector being able to cash in on that experience?

A high % of a lower wage vs a lower % of a higher wage. Which is perhaps a bit weird when the excuse often given for the lower wage is the pensions.

On the contrary, the right wing nutters are way off it. You lot think getting rid of all those brown people would help?

There are tons of ways the government could raise billions. Targeted windfall taxes on energy companies for a start. Then going after tax avoidance loop-holes. Long term, the government needs to grow the economy and borrowing money for sensible investments is worthwhile (not like the previous right-wing gov who borrowed for day to day spending and wasted probably trillions on failed investments like HS2).

I can afford to pay more tax. So can you based on your postings here. I won’t be riled up by a racist grifter, like you have been though.

We are not broke, what we do. is allow a minority to profit vastly from us without paying their due.

Instead of targeting the elderly the first job labour should hae done was siezed the funds of every tory **** and mate who profiteered during lockdown, every tax dodger and revoked citizenship of every non-dom or tax exile

Scruffy jim, rees-mogg and their ilk should have been told.if they want to set their business headquarters in ireland or the caymans then fuck off over there or pay up you shifty cunts

Renationalise infrastructure and actually reinvest.

UK population increased by more than 750,000 in 12 months - mostly due to migration

We've just had some data from the Office for National Statistics on the UK's population growth.

This covers the period from June 2023 to June 2024.

The key points are:

  • Population increased by 755,254, from 68.5 million to 69.3 million;
  • Of this, an estimated 738,718 were people immigrating - equivalent to 98% of the increase;
  • In total, 1,235,254 people are estimated to have come to UK - while 496,536 left;
  • Births added only 16,239 to the UK - with 662,148 people being born in the 12 month period, and 645,909 dying.
This is the second largest numerical jump in population since at least 1949, when comparable data began.

It is only beaten by the 890,049 increase that took place in the 12 months prior from mid-2022 to mid-2023.

Yeah, but we've always been a country of immigrants, or so I've been told. Between 1066 and 1071 it's been estimated that around eight thousand Normans settled here, that's the South Stand and a bit of Colin Bell, so no worries then.

Tax evasion masquerading as tax avoidance is the crime that never features on GB News, Talk TV, or anywhere really.

Strange that.

I think the unpalatable truth of just how shite this government is has pushed them over the edge, and they’ve descended into a glib lefty fantasy land.

Apparently, the ‘ultra right wing’ is now controlling the narrative, and the way out of it is to expel Rees-Mogg, banish all the non-doms and seize bank accounts. Then we just need to borrow a shit load more money - because it’s an endless pit after all - and then invest (not clear where) and everything will be perfect. Because that’s what they do in Scandinavia.

All sounds pretty good, has to be said.

Sure the government can choose to not renew franchises such as train operators (not that it fixes anything), but that does not work for other nationalised industries.

You have to either buy the businesses from their owners - which would cost tens or perhaps even 100+ of billions. Or you just take (i.e. steal) the businesses off them.

The government could do that, but it would face legal challenges and even if successful would be a terrible idea. No investor would ever invest in the UK again, fearing that their investment would not be safe and could also be stolen at some point in the future. Businesses like EDF didn't invest in the UK for fun, it was to make money. If they just had their business taken off then, what do think that would do for any future investment? It's a non-starter.

We don't have spare billions to spend on your ideological nationalisation fantasy, and if we did, wouldn't it be better to spend those billions on e.g. the NHS, schools, infrastructure etc? How on earth would it be a good idea to e.g. give EDF £20bn instead of giving the NHS £20bn? The government buying back these businesses would be an idiotic use of public funds.

I get that lefties want the state to own everything but honestly you need to think these things through.

So, what’s your alternative that will solve all this countries woes?

And people haven't noticed that we aren't called Sven and Inga. Seriously the "why can't we be like Scandinavia" question is easily answered: it's because we are not like Scandinavians. Culturally, we are just miles different from them. And we are not loaded like Norway is from it's vast wealth from oil and gas, built up over decades.

The left/right debate is steeped in the past. If we don’t invest properly in technology and infrastructure nothing will improve

That would discourage people from getting married, which would also be madness.

I was on the receiving end of the injustice you cite though.

Prior to my retirement, I was fortunate to earn over £125k per year most years (and my wife did not work), which meant that we got no personal allowance whatsoever, and paid circa 85% of my pay at 40% tax rate. Vs my neighbours who worked for the NHS, earning about 60k each. That meant they both got a £12.5k personal allowance, and paid nearly all of their income tax at 20%.

Although our households earned the same, the difference in our net income was stark. £93k take home for them vs my £78k. I know I should not complain about such a figure, but our houses are the same - we live on a housing estate - and there is 2 of them and 2 of us. Yet we were vastly worse off.

To put it another way, on these figures, they were around £60 per day better off than us, just because of the tax system. Galling, to say the least. And they got a much better pension and more holidays.

I have a lot of sympathy for the intent in this post however urge you don’t just look at it from the debit column, your kids (assuming you have) would have the presence of one parent all day every day that in itself is invaluable without even considering that two parents working pay out the door child care costs etc. There will be plenty of other similar sort of benefits you got for paying that extra tax that aren’t easily quantifiable.

Now my sympathy lies in the rationale that tax should be fair, so they should give tax credits for things like kids rather than just having a tax code that applies to everyone irrespective of their domestic circumstances.
