ID cards.

If you're on a visa you already need a rtw share code which has your photo on it.

For me, it's a gimmick designed to appeal to likely reform voters. It wont actually change anything.

The only thing it could then be used for it's stop and search, and that's something I think we should all be fighting against.
Mixed views on this with the amount of people carrying knives these days

I dont see the purpose of them. We have N.I. numbers, we have NHS numbers, after these compulsory ID cards are imposed on us will that stop tradesmen doing a job a bit cheaper for cash? Will it stop illegal immigrants delivering food and washing cars? Will it stop smackheads shoplifting? I'm pretty sure the answer is no to all those questions. What they do do is put in place a system which could be used to control our movements, purchases and many of our freedoms in the future, whether that be next year, the next decade or whenever. It opens us up to being controlled by governments or dictators at some point in the future. What would Trump do if he had this measure of control? All it takes is a narcissist to lie his way into power and the results could be frightening.
Moving towards a digital identity with everything in one place is inevitable. It is the only way to deliver efficient and cost effective services. The problem is that trust has broken down totally in Governments (of all persuasions). Nobody trusts politicians to tell the truth. So the opposition to a full-scale ID card is understandable. The public will not accept it till legal assurances are provided to avoid the system being abused.

Good points but presumably those that are continuing to come over by boat from all sources including French temporary destination will get news of what is actually happening in UK rather than be seduced by the image.

I don’t know the reasons why all of them come. I can’t actually think of a circumstance that I would get on one of those

I was on a dingy on holiday, briefly, and it got me thinking what it must be like to be on one - at night, in rough waters, on an overcrowded boat. It must be fucking terrifying

I used to own my own 18ft fishing boat and was always nervous when I ventured out even though I had radio comms, flares and a lifejacket on. Always ensured I never lost sight of land

Whilst I don't disagree in principle with ID cards, after all, as has been said they are quite common across Europe, it is the cack handed way and the lies that are being told about them being introduced that I disagree with.

For example.... "they will help enforce employment regulations"... no they won't! If people can work now without proper NI numbers the black market will not collapse as a result of these ID card measures - Guaranteed!!

This government came to power not mentioning cutting WFA in their manifesto but they did... and then (correctly) they reversed it. So they go from introducing desperate measures of cutting essential benefits (for many) to deciding to splurge the best part of over £2bn to introduce something that is about as much use as a chocolate teapot..... Here's one for the conspiracy theorists... just wait until we get to the point where there will be mandatory DNA samples taken and attached to the ID cards... then you can say they will be spying on you and intruding on your lives.

Sorry, but this is again another example of a clueless government being tossed around like a ship with no rudder and a leader that is weak and does not have a backbone.

So yes I do agree with ID cards but they need to be done properly and for the right reasons.... not dressed up to attempt to address a problem the Government just cannot deal with.

Not withstanding they are crossing one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

Reckon it will be used more on foreign looking types than any sort of crime. Haven't heard whether kids will need id cards as well.
It'll mainly be used for identity verification for things like online gaming, general age verification, entitlement to services and onboarding into new jobs. I've currently got separate cards for my travel pass, driving licence, library card. I also have a passport.

All of those involve some sort of digital footprint with the providers. I've just gone through thr onboarding process for a new job and it was painful, ad technology has probably made it more painful, not less, because of the number of hurdles you have to jump through, including DBS checks. All these cost firms money. Many people have a presence on one or more social media platforms, accounts with online retailers, bank accounts and credit cards, have mortgages or pay rent. All of these involve a digital footprint. These are things people have willingly signed up for, happy to give way their data to third parties.

Yet people are complaining that the government wants to put many of these digital footprints into a digital wallet.

All of these are voluntary though. You sign up to something because it benefits you, and you get to make that call. I cant see how a national ID card benefits me, particularly as I already have one I can provide if needed.

I have a passport, resident permit, drivers licence, NI number, NHS number, government gateway ID.

If I need something else I can make that decision at the time.

So I dont think I need anything to prove my right to work, services, identity. So all seems a bit pointless to me. But I'm ok with getting another card as long as it doesn't cost me (I suspect it will end up doing exactly that).

My bigger concern is whether or not you will be expected to carry ID and what will happen if you dont have it on you.

Particularly if reform get in I could see foreign looking types being pulled over on the street, and asked to prove their right to stay in the country ICE style. I'll be dead opposed to that.

They aren't 'voluntary' though. They're compulsory if you want to travel abroad, drive, work, get access to NHS medical services etc.

And it's a digital ID, not a ID card. You'll use it to prove your identity when accessing services, applying for jobs or other things.

The only EU electronic ID card system to have ever been hacked as far as I can see is Estonia 8 years ago

You have the right to get any of these or not.

In most cases people will choose to get them, but they have the right not to.

I already have digital ID through the government which I can use to confirm my identity and legal right to be in the country.

I can provide a share code to any employer which a picture of me to confirm I am who I'm claiming to be and that will confirm my right to work.

This will have no benefit to me, but it seems I wont be able to opt out.

Nah I can see that. Imagine we had them during covid with people hording certain items at the shops. Some genius in govn would have linked purchases to IDs, restrictions on what we buy.

Or being stopped in the street by the police to make sure you have had you covid jab and are therefore allowed to be where you are. That check is a criminal check, where it didn't exist before.
Imagine seeing a copper on the streets..

What about pensioners who are not allowed to join.
Every pensioner would benefit from having a modern digital wallet that covers most of their requirements.

I think the long term plan would be to go cashless, they will want full control.

Will they mean i don't have to put my email address and password in every time I want to go on pornhub?
