All of these are voluntary though. You sign up to something because it benefits you, and you get to make that call. I cant see how a national ID card benefits me, particularly as I already have one I can provide if needed.
I have a passport, resident permit, drivers licence, NI number, NHS number, government gateway ID.
If I need something else I can make that decision at the time.
So I dont think I need anything to prove my right to work, services, identity. So all seems a bit pointless to me. But I'm ok with getting another card as long as it doesn't cost me (I suspect it will end up doing exactly that).
My bigger concern is whether or not you will be expected to carry ID and what will happen if you dont have it on you.
Particularly if reform get in I could see foreign looking types being pulled over on the street, and asked to prove their right to stay in the country ICE style. I'll be dead opposed to that.
