Referees' Performances | 2025/26

I think the yellow card on donaruma for time wasting was very very suspect. Some people could think it had an air of helping out betting markets.
I put this in the Arsenal thread the other week but think it's worth putting here.

Goalkeepers, time wasting and not being given a yellow card is a bit of an issue for me that I can't seem to shake off. I've lost count of the times we as a home crowd have made our voices heard about the opposition keepers doing it. In contrast to when we are one goal in front and Ederson dares, to take his time twice in a game and is carded instantly.

Since 2012/13 when we have completely dominated the English game winning 7 titles and playing some of the best football ever seen and blowing teams away where the need for us to time waste has been virtually non-existent would it surprise you to know that from 2012 - February 2023 (the only records i can find) Ederson is the joint second keeper with most yellow cards on 7 and even more crazy is that he didn't join City until 2016. And the following season 23/24 he received a further 5 yellow cards. It's nothing short of farcical. Us and Liverpool are about the only two teams in this period that hardly ever wasted much time and always wanted the ball in play.

Now we've had Donarumma in only his third game here being carded. And these yellows haven't been issued in the 89th minute like most others. We get them early on into games. It's another easy, non-noticeable way of refereeing us differently. It really does piss me off!

And once again, a city keeper gets booked for time wasting very early on compared to most other keepers. Donnarummas second yellow in about 5 games now its ridiculous.

It’s been a penalty for years in Europe, you raise your foot that high when someone else is close enough that can challenge with their head and you’re asking for trouble.
Nah sorry that's wrong. He was no way near the ball and headed down to make contact with Nico. Never a penalty, and not been given for years because he's isn't winning the ball. He's conned the contact and those officials didn't need much persuasion.

I know. Penalties are given in the Champions League for sneezing. They want more goals. Any excuse, PENALTY. A load of shite.

It took a slo mo replay to show Nico made contact with the ball and contact was far less than a second afterwards.

It’s never been about winning the ball, if you do that and are still endangering the opponent, then in Europe in particular it’s given.

I said the same, not even sure he wasted any time. It's 38 minutes, and 1-1, why would he be "wasting time" ?

That ref was a clown from minute 1, he gave pretty much everything in one direction, quite possibly one of the worst referee's we've ever seen, and there's a very large set of bad ones to look at.

The penalty was always going to be given, but it was never a free kick in the build up in the first place.

I'm more annoyed with City tonight though, for the lame way we played that second half, all nice and safe, until it isn't, it's very very frustrating, because Monaco are largely shit.

And Nico is from Spain, where it’s exactly the same. It was a risky challenge made because he was out of position.

How can it be ‘endangering a player’ if they head-butt your calf?

Nico got the ball, which is his job. Dier didn’t get to the ball but forced a play that led him to head butt Nico’s calf. He rolled around a lot but then got up, without a mark, to take the penalty.

Seems to me that he conned the referee after he failed to get the ball.
