VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

multiple camera angles in real-time from a central hub.
communicate with the on-field referee via headset.
Goal line tech.
Bodycams or Referee Audio Broadcasts.
1) communicate with the on-field referee via headset.
Introduced before VAR
2) Goal line tech.
Nothing to do with VAR its an automated system that sends a message to the ref via a wearable device
3) Body Cams
Nothing to do with VAR
4) Referee Audio Broadcasts.
Hardly VAR tech just as a result of a VAR review
1 to 3 inc would rain if VAR was binned

There is no tech, as such, its humans looking at Video using freeze frame and slow motion hence the V in VAR

So, the VAR and assistant VAR use slow motion and freeze frame to determine that the on field ref as made a clear and obvious error! Why do they need slow motion and freeze frame to determine and obvious and clear error? Yes I know they have dropped the term but it doesnt change the question

Football evolves and no one likes change especially FOC, I embraced VAR knowing full well the challenges and tidal wave of moaning whenever there’s a contentious decision or a cock up, it was never going to be flawless. I see the benefits in VAR, the overwhelming amount of goals that would have stood but never should have , the amount of clear penalties and red cards that would never have been given prior VAR shows that it’s needed - none of which gets any praise only the negatives get highlighted and that’s fair enough.
The trouble is when West Ham get a ridiculous decision against them what does it really matter? The difference between maybe finishing 13th or 14th in the league? There's no immediate impact on the season so I can understand why you concentrate on the few decisions they get right with it.
When absolutely baffling, indescribably wrong or just plain missing VAR decisions cost you losing an FA Cup Final, getting knocked out of the Champions League, or losing a big derby match, you may begin to understand why people here hate it and the impact it's had on the league, the bottom of the barrel standards of officiating and how VAR has made it so that cheating is now a huge part of how well a team does in a season.
Sure a few decisions are right and people like yourself may think the trade off of a few correct decisions is worth losing the flow, drama and pure joy of celebrating a goal. But when you've lost the joy of the game and it's still getting the kind of wrong decisions it was brought in to correct wrong then what's the point?
If it can't be used to spot a goalkeeper handling the ball outside the box
spot a blatant handball from a defender that leads to a goal for the opposition 1000037609.jpg
, spot that an offside player is clearly interfering with play despite not touching the ball
1000037610.png
or can spot that a players heel may be 1mm offside despite the cameras not being quick enough to record this accurately and the wrong frame being used regarding the ball leaving the attacking players foot
1000037611.jpg
but during the same match the referee won't be shown the most obvious angle showing a handball goal
1000037612.jpgthen what is it really good for?
Spotting that a player brushed against Salah which means him throwing himself to the ground as if shot is definitely a penalty as "there's contact so he's entitled to go down?"

Yeh, I've heard that belittling point a few times - think you must of forget our run of top 6/7 finishes last few years under Moyes and our Europa/Conference league - small fry for you but absolutely massive for us and our fans were just as outraged and cried corruption for every VAR decision that didn't go our way - all fans feel hard done by and can give plenty of examples, some of which fully justified to feel aggrieved.

Palace game.

Var called ref to check yellow on last man tackle - the ref checked monitor and stuck with his view was only a yellow.

Mateta offside flagged off , he was onside. Goal given thanks to var.

3-3 , great game. Best one of season so far. Had it all.

VAR got it wrong again

in your opinion

its still in reality as big as its ever been, highest average attendances year on year, highest viewing figures. VAR was apparently going to kill the game and everyone was going to boycott it ... still waiting.
Yes. In fact football has never been bigger globally and at all levels in this country. That said I do think the way VAR has been used here has damaged the game as a spectacle. But I still love watching it live.

They did but was justified to ask the ref to have a look, everyone assumes refs have no power and get told what to give on the ear piece - it’s not true.
It’s time they exercised that power then One issue with VAR is the refs use it as a crutch
If we have to have it then they should be silent it seems that it’s a committee decision

Last season everyone was screaming and moaning that fans don’t get to know reason for decision- refs are doing this now, loud and clear.

The fact you have to wait weeks for these incidents, when we are almost certain every week there will be a cock up shows how ridiculous it all is.

Anyway...
It's pandering to an American market. They love all that drama, the video check, the announcement on the ground speakers, its becoming like American sport.

Perfectly put

I could, if I was that bothered point to pretty much most matches where VAR has intervened to correct a wrong decision , it feels like most matches an offside goal is correctly ruled out.

Off sides are semi automated. nobody has a problem with that, its like goal line tech.... Nonetheless I was talking about major fuckups versus major benefits. Every week major fuckup.
