City and Black History

Would I be right in thinking that Vinnie's statue is the first statue of a person of colour outside of London or Cardiff? (And I can't think of any in Ireland either).

Just an observation, by the way. I hope I'm not seen as posting this in a patronising "aren't we great" sort of way.

What a cool dude Lemn Sissay is. I never knew he was a blue. I know he had such a terrible start in life due to no fault of his own. But rather than become a problem to society, he enriched it. What a guy.
Lemn stopped for a natter, autograph, and a photo. Always loved his stuff. He had a poem near Maine Rd on the Hardy's Well for years.

Unsure if Rain, another mural poem, is still somewhere in Manchester.

I think CITY should add the poem on a wall outside the ground.

I used to see that wall poem most days on my way to work, such a shame its no longer there. It'd be nice for City to put one of his poems on one of the houses near to where Peps mural is.

I still remember Lemn sitting in my living room with bigger hair talking politics with my older brother (RIP). They were both poets and Lemn used to help run and contribute to their book of poems outlet in the late 90s.

Lemn won his poetry award not long after, I think. I think my brother was a little jealous of that, but he never let on to me to my face.

Does anybody remember the large poetry piece Lemn wrote on the Hardy Wells pub in Rusholme before it got knocked down?

You like that? That looks more like a word-game than poetry.

Sir Billy Boston, rugby league legend, has 3 statues. I know you are talking football but the beautiful game might lag behind the M62, working class game.
Did you ever see this BBC documentary on the Rugby League Code Breakers?

I know this isn’t to do with City but the North of England really embraced the black players coming into the game.

Is there one of Clive Sullivan in Hull?
I know there is a Clive Sullivan Way in Hull. Tue statue in Cardiff he shares with Billy Boston is by a Hull Sculptor.
This looks interesting at the Street Museum in Hull. It’s an exhibition on Clive.

There’s also the Clive Sullivan Trophy played for in the Hull derby every year since 2001.

Clive Sullivan was the first black British captain in any sport, the first black British player in any sport to score in a World Cup Final and the first black British player in any sport to win a World Cup (which he lifted as captain).

Again, I know this isn’t a City thing but interesting on this topic, nonetheless.

If anyone has an hour, give that documentary a watch, it’s decent.

I've just read that with the voice of Papoose (alphabetical slaughter) as my inner monologue :-)
