Villarreal (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

A win’s a win but teams at the very highest level don’t put performances in like we did in the second half.

A top team would have put five or six past them tonight.

What is the point in scoring 6 or 7 and pushing at this stage of the season, The 3 points are more important away from home to a very good Villarreal on their patch,

I agree. I thought Nico was running it overall.
Yeah. He's far better than Kovacic. Goes to show what a run of games can do for a player.

On that topic I'd love to see cherki get a run. I've got this feeling he's a generational talent but one we are in danger of losing if we don't take the gamble and play him into form. He's too good for a bit part role.

Fucking woman and her shit talk on TNT - they would never talk that way about dippers or rags - they hate it when we win
Yep, note reports have our 1st away win in a year in the headlines, where anyone else it would be a professional performance away from home

And Haaland scored again. I would have thought that might have led to a few comments because his record is amazing.

Villareal has been a perfect team for us tonight, very nice on the eye, not too "nasty" and with level of energy we can easily deal with.
Villa away on Sunday with 25% of energy will be a proper test.

That coast is having a late autumn mini heatwave so not surprised our players looked leggy second half. Away from home with very little turnaround from the Everton game.
Three points and a clean sheet, thanks post! Hope Nico is ok and Rodders is on the mend.

Good first half, deservedly 2 up. 2nd half we just tried to control it and play the clock which can be frustrating. Kit didn’t look as bad as I thought it would be.

One of those weird European away day performances.....not a lot of atmosphere in the stadium....we should have won at a canter (and in some ways we did)...excellent parts of a performance and some other sloppy bits as well....

Haaland on fire and looking very sharp - he seems to be taking more shots from distance this year as well
Nico G decent and Stones looking good again...especially after such a long lay off.
Nunes decent at fullback - loved the bit where he covered across the other side of the pitch int he first half....proper fullback work there from him...
Kova looked pretty good when he came on as well.

Wide men a bit hit and miss....Sav looking more positive again in taking his man on..still lacking killer instinct and Doku did some great work but most of it deeper than he would like probably...got fouled an awful lot and was lookking a bit frustrated.

would like to have seen cherki more but i guess its about managing his minutes at the moment.

Hope Nico G is ok as we need him

Harder game vs Villa at weekend.

I agree, although at our best, we could kill a game by keeping possession efficiently and not giving our opponents any opportunity to get back into the game, while at the same time giving ourselves chances to score more.

We're on the way back to the top. There will be nights when we only win semi-comfortably. It's a hardship, I know.

That was a heavily rotated team that was without Khusanov, Rodri, Ait-Nouri, O'Reilly, Cherki, Marmoush, Foden, Reijnders, etc. And then lost Gonzalez to injury.

In past seasons we've gone away in Europe and put in less convincing performances only to end up winning trophies in May.

In 23-24 we scraped past Red Star Belgrade, conceded an equaliser to Young Boys, and weren't that convincing against Leipzig.

We drew away at Copenhagen in 2022-23, lost away to Leipzig in 2021-22, and only got a narrow 1-0 win against Olympiakos in 2020.

Teams in Europe are no mugs. Villarreal are 3rd in La Liga and hadn't lost at home in seven months. Just take the win and be happy.

Really good first half. Second half we just made too many mistakes, in the face of a much improved Villareal press.

Nico was good, Nunes very good and Savinho had a great game - but for bollocks, he'd have had a goal & assist

3 points, clean sheet, minutes in legs, job done. Nice to see us pressing and moving the ball quickly again. A controlled team performance that will have pleased Pep.

Comfortable for the most part. Can't really ask for anything more. Nunes looked really comfortable, Nico too. Savinho couldn't stop giving the ball away in the 1st but got involved for the goal so can't be too mad at it. No such thing as a bad win away in the UCL.

I get your point, but at 2-0 they hit the post, the whole atmosphere in the ground changes if that goss in,the opposition players mindset changes and all of a sudden its game on
