26 | Savinho - 2025/26

I've been one to express my doubts but that's different than rooting against him for the sake of saying I told you so. Or refusing to acknowledge when a player steps up like Savinho did yesterday.

The similarities to Mahrez are undeniable; left foot preferred, good dribbler, instant control, can beat a man with the first touch.

Even the criticisms are similar; starting his City career looking a little light, being accused of not helping his fullback, not using his right foot enough, not enough goals..... it's FFS Mahrez all over again, it's quite uncanny.

i've always been a Savinho fan, since watching him hug the touchline in the Charity Shield, so i very much hope he becomes as good as Mahrez did.

No sign of Savinihos finishing having improved at all in his time here. Of course Pep is a great coach, his record speaks for itself. Nothing lasts forever though and I still believe he should have left at the end of last Season. Time will tell whether I was wrong in that belief.
Good to see you’ve still got that great big fuck off grey cloud following you about raining on you.
Must be hard work being so joyless.

I’ve become depressed just by reading that.

You are not wrong,he will never be good enough last night apart from the cross for Bernado,he gave the ball away every time.

He feels a long way from scoring 20 a year like Mahrez did. Even when Mahrez was crap he still scored.

Or not as the actual case may be:

At this point if you've not figured out we rate him as our first choice RW, a £75m player and one of the best young talents on the planet and arguably the best creator in the squad (at least top 3) then you're just wilfully ignoring all the evidence in front of you.

Played much better but lets not forget he had pretty good stats when he played in Spain as its not as strong as the PL Hopefully he can continue to play well but we simply need much more from our wide players in Goals

Some right fcking eggshells on here.
Player plays well and is consistent = praised. Player very inconsistent and rarely has a decent game = criticised. That's always been the way.
Going on about "hate", ffs grow up.

The assertion that you should just blindly applaud no matter what, is ridiculous for a forum. Once on the pitch - that's a completely different matter.

I honestly think Savinho and Doku are already elite wingers in the current generation. Earlier eras were probably better for the position, but right now this is the highest standard.

Have in mind that they are playing by design. They need to stretch the field, draw the defenders with doubles, play the little through ball for the underlapping run to get an easy cross for Haaland. Thats plan A. Plan B is to dribble by themselves and try to get the ball to Haaland themselves.

Only plan C is for them to score. The entire system functions to get goals from Haaland. Thats what people who say "we don't get enough goals from the wingers" get wrong. The wingers do exactly what they are supposed to do. Theres a generational goal machine in the middle. Pep decided that he will not be the target of vertical play because possession gives more security to the defense. So this is the best scenario.

But Savinho and Doku are fully bound to the system. In other teams where they would have more freedom they would undoubtedly be better individually. But the team would be weaker. Like this they play by the instructions and hope that sometimes they have a good game. But if they don't, the team still plays at a constant level. Someone will always chip in. Thats the gambit. And it works.

Bottomline, people should get off their backs. Other wingers that would be restrained by the system in the same way would have more or less the same stats. Its not easy for a winger in the current system to be a stats merchant.

He gave the ball away 6 times out of his 43 passes, 80% pass completion rate. He had one shot on target, one shot off target, one assist, one pre-assist, 100% dribble success rate from 5 dribbles, 5 key passes and 3 big chances created.

He ranked 1st or 2nd in every attacking aspect of the game in the team, apart from scoring.

Dont care my eyes tell me he is not good enough.

Mahrez signed for us when he was 27. He was an experienced player having already won the league with Leicester and won PL POTS.

Savinho was 20 when we signed him and actually got more assists last season than Mahrez did for us in his first season (13:12).

Mahrez was a French 2nd division player at the same age. He probably wasn't anywhere near Savinho's current level
Mahrez actually played half that season in the French fourth division (called the CFA at the time) for Le Havre’s reserves as he wasn’t always getting in Le Harve’s first team in the French second division at Savinho’s age.
