Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Fair enough. Villa very good today.

We're definitely better than last season but we're not quite there yet and crucial injuries made that job harder. Villa in good form and they fought hard.

We'll finish a distant 2nd to Arsenal and go for the cups, but I've been saying that since the Palace cup final. Still lots of things to play for and be proud of this season.

Yet another game though in which Savinho and Bobb were totally anonymous. They've missed their chance. Time for Doku, Cherki, and Marmoush.

An improvement on our last couple of performances at Villa Park though, and I'm gonna call it: this will be the last game we lose until 2026.
Yeah, these kinda stats normally mean an away win. Hardly panic stations.

Oliver today showed the clear bias officials show when officiating us. Last weekend he didn’t fall for players trying to con free kicks for either team and tried to keep his cards in his pocket for the Ryanair derby. Today he gave them everything for them feigning fouls and showed us 4 cards in 16 fouls, half of which were not even fouls after issuing just 2 in 22 fouls last week.
Reffing like a barcodes fan rather than a ref today.

we should of had a pen for the push on Gvardiol. And the offside was marginal. Were a bit light weight these days.

agree with all of that except the Pep bit....

I think again like last season he knows we arent strong enough....

I said during the summer that we had too many average players...issues at fullack, CDM and wingers....got roundly jumped on by some regulars on here.....but here we are....Like you say, we got away with it over the last few weeks playing some bang average teams and gettting results...but against the better teams we will struggle and that list of better teams is growing
Im with you, we arent strong enough, but to start rudolph/Silva/Foden central was criminal. Even with the injuries

As for Savinho, its getting embarrassing now. Bobb should be 4th choice getting some minutes. Not starting a tuff away game. We need 2 top level wingers, end of

Disappointing result but I think there were a few clues from Tuesday night's performance. It might also be an idea to bench Reijnders for a bit now Kovacic is back but what do I know. Onwards and upwards
Yes. I wanted to respond to this and remind you that he was our best midfielder in our worst season in 7 years so it's kinda pointless but actually I agree we should get Kovacic back in, let's just try some things. I'd also try no wingers and get the width from the full backs. But it ain't happening.

Enjoyed O’Reilly’s cameo, lol. Played like he was pissed.
Too slow to make a decision; and it happens regularly as he always needs to get it onto his favoured left foot, causing hesitation. He’s a young lad, so I’m confident he will sort that out.

As well as Villa stopped him! Come on teams at home like Villa can just be to good in all departments on the day! It’s like we don’t win it’s everyone’s fault and they all shit! Villa was just too good it happens!
I think Villa played really well and hats off to them for a really good and determined display. However I think Foden was really poor today. First half he completely hid from the game and though he did get better second half, his quality when he did get in good positions was so so poor.

Prime example is right at the end when the ball broke surprisingly to him and he was in a fantastic position. He blindly played a nothing ball into the box and blew out final good chance to get something from the game. I’d expect Foden there to get his head up and pick the right ball in but he just aimlessly played it. He had to do better in those positions and that today was not good at all.

Why were we unlucky?
Fairly obvious - on the balance of chances we’d have scored more often than not in a game. We didn’t today due to a mix of poor finishing and some brilliant blocks from them.

They scored a solitary goal from a corner they shouldn’t have had.

I agree but there is something not right with the coaching set up. There’s a lack of sharpness, basic fitness, our set pieces absolutely stink and we react slowly when it is clear change is needed. Pep always says he needs to get better so it’s fair to point these out
Criticism of Pep is fine and probably warranted at times but to want him removed is dumb as fuck

I was arguing with someone here about Arsenal and I said they weren't much more complete than us but now I'm not so sure anymore.
They won a tough game 1-0 ... they broke Palace down, and got three points, and that's title winning form .... it didn't really matter if they weren't all that impressive.

And it puts our result into perspective, because we were generally poor, and we got nowt!

And mad that we’ve got a first choice left back that we bought in the summer who can’t even get on the bench, lol.
I asked a couple of times on the match thread… is he injured again? He trained on Friday, was on the bench v Villareal, so what’s the issue?

I wasn't singling Phil out but he's what, 25 now? He's been playing at the top.level for a few seasons now. He was player of the year a couple of seasons ago. He has to start bossing games, be the main man. In his defence he isn't playing alongside Rodri, De Bruyne and Gundogan anymore, which makes a huge difference.
He was our best player today but in a very poor display by most of the team.

Villa deserved the win. Not our day. Attackers all lacked composure. But let’s not wet the bed over it lads.

It’s the same old problem, too much tinkering has broken the rhythm. Not sure why Doku, O’Riley, and Nico didn’t start as they looked perfectly fine when they came on. Winning through tinkering at Villarreal doesn’t mean it will work in the Premier League where players have no time to think before even touching the ball as shown in our awful first half.

Both Nicos were carrying knocks from the Everton & Villareal games, respectively. Pep was probably informed they could only do 30 minutes - not sure either looked fully match fit.

We have unfortunately 3 wingers Doku,Bobb and savinho who offer mostly fuck all, bar the odd game
now and again, the creative side what we have of it is being stifled or simply not used,I understand the whole keeping the ball but the majority of times it’s needless possession for the sake of it,let’s be honest bar 3-4 players this team is basically Brentford or Everton level
Of players. If we are honest we have rode our luck in a number of games hell Brentford completely dominated the second half against us,Everton only for their finishing could have had a couple of goals, this team is at that level of those teams unfortunately and some can’t except it ..
