47 | Phil Foden - 2025/26

I’ve questioned have we seen the best of him, not a reactionary comment I’m being truthful
There are two elements to his game where he excels and most of his goals and assists came from, but Pep stopped giving shit some time ago. He is just another of the mannequins to schlepp the ball around.

Never in a million years he Foden going to be able to get anywhere near the levels of David Silva, Kdb, Yaya et al.

Just never going to happen.
I said that last season and funnily enough I mentioned the same three players. He may have a few decent minutes in a game, create a few chances and maybe score a goal or two but I can’t see him ever going to control a match in the same way any of those three players did. It’s not his fault he’s been put on such a high pedestal of expectation.

What levels are those?

He’s already surpassed Silva and Yaya in team and individual honours.

Some serious revisionism going on with suggesting they never had bad games.

Too busy running around asking the ref for free kicks, penalties, corners, throwins etc. when none of them were.

Just pay football.

Foden was a bright spark today. The problems lay deeper in midfield and in the tactics. The few times we got foden on the ball in the correct position he looked inventive. The passes were just a tad off but the ideas were there. fine margins between creating nothing and having a worldie. Far, far from the issue today.

His lack of productivity is a big issue.

But do we want him to create or score?? He’s been dropping deep and creating in the e last few games. Because he’s providing the pre assists, his own numbers aren’t there but the goals we do score are in large part because he’s creative in build up even if he’s not then in the box.

His shooting against Brentford was shit true but can we have it both ways - if he’s splitting defence with passes deep in the midfield he’s not then going to always be in the box to turn them in.

At least one or the other.

But he’s been doing the other. So how can productivity be a serious issue if he’s been doing it against Napoli, utd, Everton etc
That's about it though, there is no etc, and against United he scored but the creativity was mainly from Doku.

We can agree to disagree. I think he’s been really positive on the ball this season and played some great creative football. It doesn’t always come off true and im not claiming today was world class from him - far from it. But generally the last 9 games he’s been up there as our best player and when it hasn’t resulted in a goal (Monaco?) it’s because others arent taking the chances he’s providing.

I would love to see him scoring more and fuck knows the team need to step up to support Erl but I also appreciate the build up he’s been doing.

This is completely inadequate for a creator. He lacks personality and courage with the ball. He constantly raises his hands to ask for the ball, and when he receives it, he has his back to the play and passes it to the passer.

His very weak right foot will hamper him for the rest of his career. As a defender, I would systematically push him to his right side and I would have controlled him 90% of the time. I'm not even talking about his weaknesses in duels, he's very weak, really. He needs to improve in this area if he wants to be converted into a number 8, because I don't see any future for him as a number 10.

He created the opener against Everton, he also put haaland clean through who should have scored in that game.
Yes he was excellent against Everton, but it hasn't been the case in other games, especially away from home.
