Direct football and City

If you create plots like these, you have to be careful how you interpret them. In the City v Liverpool game there were passing sequences from City that went from one end of the pitch to the other. They produce data that appears in the region described as slow and intricate but it is only slow in the sense that the ball progression in the direction of the goal is slow but the passing at the same time can be fast and precise as City play through the press. Haaland and Doku's game is not 'slow and intricate'. I recall some really good football against Liverpool but if you were to plot it in these graphs it would appear in the slow and intricate field.

I agree but the aggregated figures, especially where they cover several seasons, give some clue. Yes, they are by no means definitive. Tempo and rate of progress towards the goal are quite different measures.

The ones that cover multiple seasons are irrelevant as seen by the very last one which details them season by season. The only use for the previous charts is to show just how much we've changed this season.

Baffled.

Also, the charts for this season are far from complete as we're only 11 games in. FWIW, I think we're adopting a faster, more direct approach than we did in the past. We've scored a fair few goals this season where we've countered on teams - the kind of goals we've conceded previously. At the same time, Pep isn't sacrificing his basic principles and is instead tweaking things.

I think we're able to attack with precision passing in the decisive moments of games and we're also much more prepared to sit deep and defend which we haven't seen from Pep's sides before e.g., 2nd half at home to Liverpool and away at Arsenal. Whether this is a temporary style that reflects a City side in transition or it is going to be a permanent feature, I don't know.

Last season there was a lot of useless sideways passing. This season we seem better able to pass through sides with Foden and Cherki, or Doku can go at it.

I still can't believe with all the money spent on skilful, quick players and with their long reputations for playing passing football, Arsenal and the Dippers main threats are now throw ins and corners. Shame on them.

Whenever the Arse get a corner, Eze must think 'what the feck am I doing here'.
