Donny
Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, O'Reilly
Gonzalez, Bernardo
Foden, Reijnders, Doku
Haaland

We need Reijnders to have one of those games he had against Arsenal. They will be up for it but we have the better players.

This was our line-up last season there:
———————Ederson———————
Walker—Dias—Akanji—Gvardiol
———————-Kovačić——————-
—————-Lewis—Gündoğan——-
Foden———Haaland——Grealish
Wow five players out of eleven left.
No wonder were not look consistent yet this season.
I've no doubt a big fella upfront scores tomorrow hopefully our big Viking.

Feels like another test of where we are this season. We look great at home but haven’t quite been as good on the road. We still have moments where we look a little fragile.

Newcastle are similar decent at home dreadful on the road so expect a tough evening. Liverpool scraped a win against them despite playing against 10 men, Arsenal pulled out an injury time set piece to win there. Tonali, Guimaraes and Joelinton are an excellent midfield trio. It always seems to be an emotive ground.

Our 3-2 win a couple of seasons ago really set us up for the run in. Any sort of win would really put pressure on arsenal. We’re good enough but we’ll need to dampen the crowd.

We've got options, so up to the bald man to get this right. Feel like reijnders' mobility could be handy in midfield and cherki could be a bit of a gamble to start (but great to come on) so wonder if bernie might go on the right. I've obviously no qualms with cherki starting the way hes playing, just wondering how Pep will play it

I feel a bit like I did before the liverpool game - if we hold our own in midfield (where they're strongest) the attacking players can get at their defence and are far superior. Big challenge for Nico G in that midfield and if he does anywhere near as good a job he's done of late we should be good for the win.

Defo got the physicality and bollocks to go to st James on a Saturday at half 5 and get the job done with the Nico O Reilly, Nunez, dias, doku erling, phil and the don in there. Very much hoping for another big performance and win. Got to be getting doku 1 on 1 with trippier.

Stinking midfield

It seems obvious that if Rodri were to fully recover, this side would be very strong.

In the embargoed part of the pre-match press conference (https://www.mancity.com/citytv/mens/newcastle-v-manchester-city-pep-guardiola-on-oscar-bobb-63899321), at ~2 minutes, Pep is asked an interesting question about whether he feels City can compete on all fronts this season. He answers yes, and adds that Rodri will come back soon. It was a kind of throw-away remark, and not in answer to a specific question about Rodri, nevertheless I thought it was worth mentioning.

I

hmmm - they could easily boss the midfield if we don't get it right, and Gordon and the German fella will be a threat
Gordon is 50-50 according to Howe. Perhaps he might be on the bench or he will not play 90 minutes.

When we play Newcastle at SJP, I worry about the physicality of Newcastle e.g., Linton crashing into players. We can combat this by good possession. Almost any kind of result is possible because Newcastle are short on confidence but in my opinion they are likely to play at a very high intensity after a bad period of form. They need a result and will feel that they can beat City after going close to beating Liverpool and Arsenal. As Pep said in previewing the game, they do not have the points they might have expected but it doesn't matter, this is a CL side. We should expect a difficult game, but at the same time I think that should we score first, their form might have dented their confidence.

Newcastle have been a bit hit and miss this season, losing 4 of their last 6, losing their last 2. Always a tough game though and hoping to see some more progression with team dynamics and come away with at least a point to keep our non-losing streak there in tact.

Start of some interesting fixtures where we play 6 out of 8 PL games against bottom half teams, with the other 2 games against a high flying Sunderland. Will any of these teams go at us as we’ve seen with a couple of teams lately, or will we have to try and fight our way through a 10 man defence?

That midfield against theirs......................................

Sunderland will field 2 totally different teams in our matches against them. The game on NYD they will be losing 6 or 7 players (most starters) to the AFCON.

Will be interesting to see how they cope after that.

And I hope they do play their normal football at the Etihad against us. We will beat them easily if they do.

Tough game as it always is up there, no team ever has it easy. As good as their midfield is they are also not averse to kicking lumps off the opposition, i hope the ref is on them early doors.

Newcastle haven’t had great results across the board but they have played well at home when I’ve seen them. I didn’t see their defeat to Barça so can’t comment on that but they played well in losing to Liverpool and Arsenal and have won all the rest against Benfica, Athletic, Wolves, Forest and Fulham. P8 W5 D0 L3 F14 A8, only conceding 1 goal in their 5 wins, with either a win or good performance in 7 of the 8 games (maybe all 8 but as I say I didn’t see the Barça game to know if they played well or not).

While we’ve been good at home and were decent at Wolves and Arsenal, the rest of our away performances have been a bit average and our record is only okay. We’ve played 6 away in the PL+CL and have W3 D2 L2 F11 A6. We’ve only really played well in spells or for one half in a number of games (good first halves but very different second half displays at Monaco, Villarreal, Brighton and Brentford).

However, we have built a good bit of form after good performances in some home wins against three decent sides going into this fixture.

It should be a cracker!

I thought the best game in the whole 2023-24 PL season from any teams was the Newcastle 2 City 3 game in the January. Would be good to have another like that.

All five goals were top class. Commentator sounded gutted with our winner there, haha great stuff!
