The Labour Government

Thanks, but having been in drawdown from my PP for nearly 10 years, I do have an inkling how they work. My portfolio is spread across 16 funds and has grown about 12% this year. Whilst not as substantial as my friend, that is 12% that I have done nothing to get except be invested-something I really have no choice to do otherwise inflation bites. I don't know at what level a, say, 1% levy should/could kick in, but let's say those with a fund over £2m. That's a one off levy of £20k. It could be taken directly out as charges are to pay fees.

As for your position. Good that you're contributing to your pension and taking advantage of a 40% bung from other tax payers, actually being subsidised by those that can't afford to pay in extra to their own pension. But don't forget, that money that has now been sucked out of the economy is effectively now "dead" until you choose to draw down and put some of it back into the economy. I don't for one minute criticise your action, but it must be seen in context, and I had the same view as you when I was younger. The fact is you're not "giving it away", you're contributing to the services that you/we all use, but as you allude to, you're one of those that isn't really prepared to pay for those services.

Would you expect tax payers to give your pot money if it was down 12% this year?

Her initial ideas about these funds needing to invest in UK was better idea for growth. Whatever happened to that?

I'm not defending it but p/per mile puts it into context. I doubt many do the journey every day but as usual it's the worst case that's quoted.
By car you're looking about half the cost in fuel, we are supposed to be getting people to use public transport. I can't see how anyone cannot believe a lot of train journeys cost way too much, us brits really will put up with any old shite, the debate has run it's course though.
I believe we should cycle or move to Crewe, fucking Crewe:-)

TBF Crewe is a Mecca for folk who like trains.

Lets encourage people to get into work and then charge them £16 k (£23k before tax and NI ) to get there,

Add £20-24k in child care costs and that is, what, best part of £50k coming out of a households pay just to work?

I’ve no idea why people don’t bother.

better to look on the bright side.
Better still to call it what it is.

A damaging and entirely avoidable further tax raid, caused by an incompetent Chancellor pushing borrowing far beyond sensible or sustainable levels just a year ago, and who has subsequently lost control of public expenditure, caused in large part by botched attempts to reform welfare expenditure.

The dire performance of the Labour leadership, and their loss of authority across their party, dictates that this tax raid will be increasingly focussed on a small number of internationally mobile higher earners, while welfare expenditure will (perversely) actually be increased in an attempt to delay any move to replace the prime minister.

Meanwhile, the circus of speculation and briefings in the run up to the Budget has damaged economic confidence- over and above that already caused by the NIC hike- and further measures will be required next year when tax receipts again fall short of expectations.

Budget predictions.

Probably a million miles from what will happen but here goes.

VAT abolished on petrol. However petrol duty to be increased in line with what is currently is paid in VAT . In addition the 5p freeze on petrol duty to be removed.

Booze. Reduction in booze duty for drinks bought in pubs and restaurants. Increase in duty for booze bought in supermarkets. This will be done under the banner of protecting jobs in the hospitality industry.

Home deliveries. A levy to be charged on home delivery of food and parcels ( Deliveroo and Amazon etc) . This will be done to try and help the high street fight back and ensure these companies pay their way for the added congestion they cause.

An indication that a mileage charge will be levied on EVs . The government has seen reduced income from petrol duty.

Just a guess for fun.
I'd support these.

I'd tie in Deliveroo,Amazon and Uber drivers with migration. And make it official people seeking asylum are given jobs in this industry whilst waiting for their claims to be processed. Which would also prevent some of the nefarious practices taking place in these industries.

This budget has been nothing but a shambles with the constant u turns.

Please send me the winning lottery numbers for next Saturday.....

Nothing ... I repeat Nothing has been announced yet (checks notes * it happens tomorrow) until it is announced there can be NO U turns.

All you are doing is speculating .... its like (Not So) Cleverly on Sky this morning announcing that all the multi millionaires are leaving the country.. but couldn't put a number to it.
