Running thread

71 year old doing regular sub 34 minute 5K for the last few months, would like try 10K, any advice on training strategy?
I love reading about your running mate.

I agree with OB's comments. Emphasis on the 'gently.' The advice is to increase your total weekly mileage (or kilometrage, whatever!) by no more than 10% each week. Also, give yourself lower-mileage recovery weeks as needed.

And most importantly, enjoy!

Just signed up for a 70 mile ultra run. No idea of the mileage, length of runs or how I should train but strength work seems to be a key component.

Lots of research to undertake along with the training.
That's amazing mate! Yeah, strength work is really important for these mega runs for a couple of really good reasons:

* You're at heightened risk of injury and strength work is proven to reduce that;
* It makes you more efficient by addressing muscle imbalances, improving form and increasing economy (i.e. reducing the amount of energy required with each stride).

It sounds like an amazing thing to do. I look forward to seeing how it goes. When is the event?

We might get a few people looking in this thread more now the New Year resolution etc are coming up. Here's some advice for how I've done it this year since I made a resolution to get into it last January.

I've done running on and off but never anything serious. I started running again more back in January and the best thing I did was signing up for an event and doing Parkruns - the buzz of an event is brilliant. My first Parkrun was awful and this week did a hilly one in 26 mins. I've done a few 10ks which I didn't think I'd be able to do with my dodgy knees but it's true what they say - the more you run, the stronger your knees and the better they get. 10k has become an 'easy' run for me now! :O

I never thought I'd be able to comfortably run more than 10k. It was more my knees were goosed from football I suspect. I was more of a football runner and sprinter and I never considered myself built for longer runs.... but I did my first half marathon running around Manchester on the streets last week.

I've not done anything special, nothing clever it's just literally getting out there and putting the miles in. Like anything - the more you practice, the better you get. Body wise, I'm in great shape for my age - I've had a few people notice how toned I am and generally I feel like I did at 25 (not my knees!) and I'm considering a marathon next year.

If you're thinking of running, start, keep with it and you will be surprised at how far you can go.

Hi mate it’s the Wall Ultra (Carlisle to Newcastle) and it is in June.

Ironically I’ve got myself injured, so back in with the Physio next Tuesday so not ran for nearly 2 weeks. I’m trying to look at it as a positive and think a rest, to give my muscles/tendons a break might prove a positive long term.

Other advice on here great. My response would be to do an out and back run of 20 minutes from home, at which point turn around and head back. Try and noticeably slow down from your regular 5km pace (for the first few times), and ignore (for now) how far you’ve run. One you’re comfortable with that (no rush) do 25 mins out and back.
Once you’re up to 30 mins out and back, you’ll have broken the back of it and be fine.

Most of us can run 10km at our 5km pace; there’s no physiological reason we can’t, it’s just in the mind.

Remember before I did my first half marathon I went out and ran 7 miles from home, turned round and came home. But I did it an unbelievably slow pace. I just wanted to prove to myself I could cover the distance. After that, never did more than 10 mile training runs.

Good luck anyway!

Many thanks for the advice, much appreciated, will give it a try.

Very tempted by this myself! I know some people in and around Carlisle who've done it. I've done some of the Hadrian's Wall route (in the other direction though) but would love to do this.

Hope the injury clears up quickly for you - it's frustrating but I guess you've got plenty of time before the event.

Parkrun 250 , woo hoo!

270 days sober today. Still keeping up with the running and aiming to do above 62.2 miles (100km) a month.
Done Blackburn 10k on Sunday and got a PB of 51:46. Previous best was 56:48 so absolutely buzzing with the time. I nearly signed up for the Marathon in April but its sold out maybe gone to soon but this is most consistent I've ran ever, Been running 62.2 miles since May/June time and doing plenty of walking when I'm not running

Signed up for Liverpool half in March and Manchester half in May (or if we're in Budapest thats off) I ran an half recently and beat my previous best so happy with how things are going. Just need to keep it up through the cold winter months

That's a belting read mate, the soberness sure does help the running and vice versa, getting signed up for races is a great way to keep focused on it as well.

Plenty of other marathons around (http://www.marathonrunnersdiary.com/races/uk-marathons-list.php).

Did the Liverpool half a few years ago and be warned - it can be cold and windy! Great Manchester Run half is great for the atmosphere.

I’m planning to train for the Manchester 1 and see how I progress which gives me a goal to aim for but I’ll check the list above to check if any other options work for me. I did fancy 1 in Europe but i'll see.

There are 19 weeks until Manchester, and my longest run so far is 13.3 miles, so I’ve got a solid base to build from.

Valencia is a good one if you do fancy a trip, it's on this Sunday so they will be selling places for next year soon.
Marathons are mega popular now so if you do want to get one you have to move sharpish after the entries open, and if you want to do a major well you will need a lot of luck in a ballott or a ever decreasing qualification time.
I've got three majors and have a place for Sydney next year, but I'm starting to think getting into any of the others (NY, Tokyo, Berlin) is never going to happen as they have millions trying to get in through the ballots and the qualification times are crackers

Fantastic achievement mate

Great effort mate

If your long runs are currently around 13 miles then you easily have enough time to train up for a full marathon in April. Manchester is a good course, as well - relatively flat. I got my PB there. Good luck, mate.

I think they're going down the ballot route for Valencia as well. They've done it for the half next year at least. It's a shame but it's been getting more and more popular over the last few years.

I'll bob out and watch a bit on Sunday when they come my way. That's if I can walk! Got a 35km trail race just outside of Valencia on Saturday with 1450m elevation. Not as prepared as I would've liked though.

I did Manchester in 2018. The day after the derby we should have won the league.. I did it in 5:21 but wasn't running properly towards the end of the training I was running long but only 1 run a week which wasn't anywhere near enough so I feel like I owe it a good going at. I pretty much knocked the running on the head after that apart from a few months in covid I restarted in May this year and been consistent, looking at upping the mileage to 20+ miles a week and seeing how I get on
