Old Maine Road photos thread

It was 'must go' cos you didn't want to miss the away game when we won.
First it was Wolves in the LC and then we won at Bradford City (4-2) when Stewart got a hat trick. Honestly the buzz from winning was unbelievable.

The pressure to win games now means I rarely celebrate, more about thinking about the next game. And the NEED to win again.

In those days the joy was fantastic and you bounced into school/college/work!
I was away studying in Portsmouth in 86-87 but managed a few away days. QPR on the plastic pitch a 1-0 loss. Not one solitary shot. Absolutely shite. We signed Stewart late in the season and you could see he was a level apart (and then some) but the damage was already done.

Remember out boozing in Pompey following season on the night we beat Wolves, ringing my dad from pub phone box and not quite believing him. We’d lost the first leg 1-0 due to catastrophic Nixon error. Won 2nd leg 2-0 thanks to Gidman and Hinchcliffe IIRC. Start of a decent run to QF (coach windows all caved in at Goodison).

Some great away days that season -travelling up from Pompey, Swindon 4-3, Bournemouth 2-0, Reading 2-0. Stewart in absolutely brilliant form.

Still good pals - that's Stan Bowles/right and Brian Kidd, who had their names taken by referee Kevin Howley, when they clashed in the Manchester 'Derby' on Sat. They are pictured watching a local game near where they live in Moston, Manchester. October 1967.

You've just reminded me..another match I decided I wasn't gonna bother with
Swindon away 4-3!! Think we were raining goals at that partc time...
Thinking back I was traveling on my own to games at the time and had no idea how to get to Swindon from notts where I lived..
Next season at Swindon away I was on it car bonnet.idvjoined the leicester and rugby supporters club,we travelled down in a mini bus hitting the famous '7 roundabouts in one ' at 9.30 am as we were playing Swindon supporters club in a match..I can't remember the score ,so I assume we lost, lol, we didn't lose many in those days,Swindon then took us into their social club,
And now ,as an FOC..I can't remember the score of the real match...

Following season we played Swindon on New Year’s Eve. I went on official supporter coach. Won 2-1, Jason Beckford winner I think.

Young Bernard caught this while he was keeping an eye on the Jaguar, which is the sort of responsibility that comes with working alongside a man of my standing. If that dog leaves its business there I will have Bernard invoice it, simple as that. ‘Commit no nuisance’ applies to all species in my book.

I told him to get the shot sharpish. Real football, scruffy, happening under my stewardship while the rest of the football world chases glamour it will never understand.

And you know, years from now these youngsters might well claim they learned their trade in the shadow of Maine Road with Peter Swales overseeing the lot, quietly shaping the future as only I can.

Great photo!

You forget how big the old mosaic sign was. The replica at the Etihad is much smaller, this is taken with me just stood over it:

Yep,I was in the away seats that day next to a good Blue mate from Birmingham
Clive Stoddard ..when Beckford scored, I went mental...could not control myself, knocked poor Clive out of his seat, celebrating wildly........back in the day " each away goal meant more
