47 | Phil Foden - 2025/26

He lacks the intelligence to be our main playmaker. I’m sorry, but if Cherki and Doku were complemented by someone with Odegaard’s brain and vision, we’d be unstoppable.

Don’t get me wrong; he’s having a good season compared to last year. Been productive in recent games and has definitely seen more involvement. But if City want to become the best team in Europe again, we’re still missing that profile who truly complements our front 3. It was obvious last night, not just in terms of creativity, but also in how we control matches.

We miss that intelligent central playmaker: KDB in his prime type, or a young Fabregas or Kroos. Someone who dictates rhythm. Foden has talent, but he doesn’t yet have the game IQ to control matches consistently or find space at the right moments.

Fans pretend he’s going through some physical issue or lacks desire. That’s not true. The real problem is his speed of thought and the execution passing and shooting, which just aren’t at the level the greats in that position have. Rodri coming back will help with control of course, you still need someone in that 10 role acting as a genuine creative hub.
I don’t know where to begin with this.
Absolute bollocks probably covers it.
Speed of thought is outstanding. Passing execution, same. He was the player of the year at 22.
KDB and David Silva were not at his level at his age.
You are entitled to your opinion but man its delusional.

You have to question why this thread always fills up with posts about him not being the new David or KDB the second he has an average game. Hes just passed KDB on the blues scoring list. He doesn’t need to be Kev, he’s Phil Foden.
He’s neither of both. Don’t get the comparisons regardless of his performance

Fair enough, but think you’ve misunderstood my point. Nobody’s denying his ability or what he’s achieved at a young age; he’s clearly talented and having a good season.

My point is about profile, not ability. City’s attack with Cherki and Doku needs a different kind of No.10 to control games and link phases. Foden’s strengths are in ball-carrying, combination play and final third moments, not dictating tempo like KDB, prime David Silva or Sneijder did. Foden doesn't have the natural intelligence of these players

You can be world class and still not be the ideal profile for a specific role. That’s all I’m saying.

Already 9th on the All Time Goal Scorers list (with a great chance of finishing 2nd) and If he plays in the next two games, then he'll be on 340 and halfway to Alan Oakes' All Time Appearances Record..

That's absolutely phenomenal especially as we still can't agree over his overall status or even his best position
That is staggering tbh. To be our 9th top scorer of all time ...is incredible for a midfield player in his mid 20s,
Wow.

Foden has played mostly as a forward, though. He is more capable of scoring goals than our midfield legends and less capable of creating chances or dictating the game (so far).

But Foden is still relatively young and may develop into a top midfield player. Time will tell.

The step he needs to take this season is to perform well in big games. He scored vs United and was excellent vs Napoli, but against Arsenal and Real, and even Liverpool, he did little apart from covering a lot of ground. He wasn't sufficiently involved for a midfield player.

It’s ridiculous, he had a normal game in midfield in a team that won 2-1 away at the Bernabeu but because he didn’t get 2 assists, score a screamer from 25 yards and nutmeg Jude Bellingham he’s gone back to being shit and not intelligent enough again

Reminds me a bit of the posts about never being able to find a like-for-like replacement for Yaya, and how we'd be doomed when he hung up his boots. Unsurprisingly we didn't replace him; we bought in different players and began playing a different system, and we became even better.

It doesn't really matter whether or not Phil is or isn't KDB or Silva (neither of which are like one another), only that he can play whatever role Pep has for him in whatever system we're currently playing.

Exactly this. Our expectsations are high for Phil and I get that, come through the academy and all that but hes just scored 5 goals in 3 games. Hes going to have quieter games now and then.

Amazing stats for such an unintelligent and weak player ;)

How people can spout the shite they do in this thread when they see stats like that I honestly don’t know!!

And didn’t he score there the other year, also?

That's right, because regardless of conflicting opinions, he's statistically already one of our greatest ever players, and even allowing for the extra competitions (when compared to previous "greats") he's already scored 67 league goals.

In mitigation I can only assume that it was the absence of social media that prevented some of the previous players from any abuse or even negative opinion

Surely Swift and Trautmann would have made some mistakes in vital matches?
Why didn't we buy a decent goalkeeper in the late 60s/early 70s when ours were making so many mistakes in the big matches?
How did we defend our league title so abysmally in 37-38 and 68-69?
How did we lose 5-1 at Soke and Wolves in the early 70s?
I wonder if some blues never rated Alan Oakes' or Neil Young, or even wanted Ron Saunders to stay?
