I watched the 1984 film adaptation of the book starring John Hurt and Richard Burton recently. We really aren't that far away from that kind if scenario.

If I had a 30 year master plan, it would be to dumb down the masses with the rise of technology so they can't think for themselves, then suddenly restrict that tech to all but the ruling classes and reduce everyone else to subservient poverty.

I had some dipshit from Halifax (our waiter one night) telling me he had a couple of ‘speed boats’ docked up in Saint Tropez that he was planning on retrieving at some point. Apparently had run into a bit of bother and had to leave them there for a hasty exit.

It's not all like that, though. I was walking next to the beach near Marbella (when Sean Connery had a house there) and asked a bloke "habla inglese?" He was English and just said "English, Spanish, French.... whatever you want". Whereas if I try any local language on holiday, chances are they assume I'm German because Brits don't even usually try.
