14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

Comparing anyone to Silva, Yaya, NDJ, peak Rodri is an unfair comparison for a young lad finding his feet in a Pep team and the most difficult position on the field, but…hey, that’s BM & City fans right now!
It's only some, normal people can see where he's at, and this season he'd been run into the ground, and needed a rest long before the "knock".

Quite an assumption, that - based upon what?
What Pep asks of the position and what he has said about it.
At the top level, I think that every position is equally difficult.
You would think wrong.
I was a striker - occasionally a DM which I could just about pull off - but on the couple of times I tried full back, I didn't have a clue. And I'm old enough that these occasions were when 'all' a full-back had to do was defend. The funky new term 'wing-back' hadn't yet been invented. A completely different skillset for which I had zero aptitude.

Were you a DM, by any chance?
Like you, I was a striker who worked his way backwards towards a Beckenbauer role with age and experience…and it had not a little to do with the fact that we had a younger team as I got older. And, by older, I’m talking 24-25, not 35-50!

I have played every position except full back, and I can tell you (as you self assert above!) they’re not all as challenging as the DM pivot in a team that plays a 4-1-4-1 that transitions to a 2-1-4-3!

It’s funny that people were rightly crying out for Rodri to recover, and even more so after his setback, but then people began being more positive about Nico. In fact, as Rodri returned, they were hoping he would be paired with Nico, because even Rodri himself was struggling given the team around him.

As we have looked increasingly fragile, almost to a person, we have exhorted how, in some games, we need Nico alongside an improving Rodri.

However, because Pep hasn’t come out and said he has a calf injury which he’s struggling to shake off (which they are), punters come out of the woodwork and call him a soft arse!

It beggars belief, especially given we have about 9 sick notes in the squad, yet he’s getting targeted!

And you didn't?

All ex-players like to think that their position was the most taxing.

And I didn't gravitate backwards - I was a striker all my life who guested at DM for a lower-level team as a favour a couple of times. I still maintain that full back is a very difficult, specialist role.

I'm not still sure about Nico G - improving though, so we'll see. Definitely dumped onto his arse a bit too easily at the moment, though.

I back him as a player, but I don't get these mystery injuries that keep cropping up and sidelining him for a handful of games at a time. I’m worried we’ve ended up with another John Stones situation on our hands with Gonzalez.

Hmm. I think it was a call to arms for him.

“I don’t think so”.

Not definitive.
Sounded pretty definitive to me:

“Marc cannot play, Antoine cannot play, Rodri cannot play, apart from all the players on the sidelines.

Nico will not be ready. Savinho will not be ready, Stones will not be ready”

Hmm. There was something about the tone of voice that got me thinking it was a challenge to him.

We shall see!

So, it was “we’ll see” the day before the United game but no he’s definitely ruled out - all very odd

You mean v Orient in the cup, where he was absolute dogshit, lost the ball and they scored a wonder goal?

He's not been much greater since, too many relying on him coming back into the team asap, that's why we are like we are at this moment, and desperate for a running in treacle player to patch up the midfield, haha, Christ, can't wait
He was fouled and had to go off injured

Turbo, Nico G.-s injury is not a mystery, one ABSOLUTE BASTARD OPPOSITION PLAYER KICK HIM WITH KNEE IN THE UPPER SIDE OF CALF AND THAT CAN HURT FOR WEEKS... I try find which player that was but i find nothing... But what is the worst, novadays all opposition players can injuring our players without punishment because of PIGMOL let them do it, and all opposition teams have trauma from LICKLE CITEH beat the shit out from them with fantastic football... And when they cannot beat us in footballing way, they always have the primitive good old kicking everything that moves... without beeing sent off, the cunts.
